What are the different types of after market shields people put on the fenders and how hard are each to remove properly? And what damage, if any, shows on the body after?

Most, if not all, of the aftermarket shields are simply stuck on with an adhesive. This is how most emblems are stuck on vehicles these days.

Take a hairdryer or a heat gun (on low) and heat the shield up to loosen the adhesive. Then take some fishing line, slide it under an edge on the shield, and move the line back and forth while working it across the shield. This will separate the shield from the car. Then go back with some adhesive remover to get any of the residue off.

Fairly simple and doesn't result in any permanent damage to the car.
