I'm in the market for a used E-Class or CL Benz, I dont really want to buy one without a warranty but have a found a few private party sales which are good deals.

Does anyone have any recommendations/experience on an outside third party warranty company I can use? I know the private dealers always offer some but for this time around I dont want to go in without one..thanks

I have a 3rd party warranty on my car, which I got from teh dealer when I bought the car. I don't remember the name of the company, but it has been utterly useless. The few times I have taken my car in for repairs, the company has denied the claim saying the problem was either my fault or normal wear and tear. So it was pretty much just a waste of money.

Had one at one time and it was useless since claims were always denied for reasons described above. I got on the phone with the warranty company and cancelled my "warranty" while having every penny of my premiums refunded. If they weren't going to do any work they had no need to keep any of my money.

I've always heard that 3rd party warranties are not very good.
People say that only factory warranties on pre-owned cars are worth buying.
I think almost every manufacturer offers these kinds of factory-backed warranty programs but I don't think they are done on private party sales, only certified pre-owned cars through the dealers.

Scam. Just try to do your research and buy a good car from the start.

Had one on my Corvette and it more than paid for itself. Replaced the a/c compressor, resealed various parts of the transaxle three times, replaced wheel bearing, replaced radio sender/transponder in the car for the key fobs, replaced ECU for drivers side door, replaced various belt drive pullies. Chevrolet makes crap cars and had I not had the warranty the car would have been even more of a nightmare.

I had one through my credit union. It was reasonably priced but I never used it. I just thought of it as secondary insurance.

When I got my Audi used, they tried hard as heck to get me to buy one of their warranties for $3-4k. I knew that the dealer makes the real dough from the warranty, perhaps more than the car itself. The car salesman was low pressure but the warranty guy they passed me off to was a bulldog. I said I didn't want it, I'd take my chances that the car wouldn't need $4k in work in the next 3yrs/36k miles. The guy kept exclaiming, "well you're a real gambling man, you moved to the right city. I'd NEVER take that risk."

In 15 months and 30,000 miles, I've only had $200 in work that could even be considered warranty, the rest was all wear and tear (tires, brakes, belts, etc). I think I won the bet, so far.

I was thinking the same thing. I was getting charged about 2.5k for two years that covered engine and tranny. The only thought in my mind was I have bought a used car that looked and ran absolutely "perfect". It was babied like we would our own cars.....2 weeks later tranny starts slipping, few days later tranny blows. Lucky for me it was a daily driver and didnt cost too much to rebuild.

At the same time it seems like a waste now that I know they can also decline claims with a bunch of BS, I hate to keep thinking it cant happen to me on a fairly expensive car...probably will go the route of a private with previous records..

I think most require that the car be under warranty when you purchase the contract or they charge a ton extra. I lost $700 when the company I used went belly-up a week after I bought my contract. I was lucky it was just my down payment, as lots of people lost their entire contract price and/or had claims pending.
