Got to drive my father's 1964 330 GT 2+2 when I was 17 on a private road in England. He couldn't get insurance for me to drive any of his Ferraris on public roads until I was 25, so I got to drive them on the track at Goodwood and other British tracks and also Mas du Clos in France before I could drive on on public roads. My Dad had 4 Ferraris in his lifetime the 330 a 365 GT 2+2 a 365 GTC4 and a 365 GT4 2+2 so I got to drive all of them plus a few new cars that Maranekko Comcessionaires let me drive when they first came out. Now I'm shopping for my first F-car a 328 GTS. It's been a lifelong ambition ever since I visited the Ferrari factory when I was 14 and was driven around the Maranello area by John Surtees in a 330 GT 2+2, I've been looking for almost a year now and have enjoyed learning what to look for. I hope to buy the car in the next few weeks.
Holy Crap!!!!! Nice gathering...Boxer, Daytona, 355, 308.... You should consider yourself luck my friend.
all i ever got a chance to do was druel about these cars i had to wait a good 30 odd years before i was able to buy one, i grew up in a lower middle class neighborhood and no one could afford these cars only dream, my dream finally came true. and when i meet some one who adores these cars like myself and they have a license and can drive a stick i always allow them to take her for a spin, it puts a smile on my face just knowng i made there day..
I was 16 and it was a 355 spyder. I drove it around the parking lot. Next one was when i was 18 I drove a 360 F-1. Antony
17, and the car was a black/dark red 550 Maranello. Extremely nice Ferrari owner. That thing was pretty fast... Then I got a ride in Paul's (Bumboola's) 360 CS...that car was just stupid. If I ever own a Ferrari, it's going to have the F1 tranny, that's all I know.
When i was 24, i flew out to California to hang out with a bunch of the FDC guys... While planning the trip, (and even months before) Ron Shirley kept saying that if i was ever out in his area, he'd let me drive his Mondial 3.2 Cabriolet... Well he wasn't lying... i flew out Friday afternoon and spent the whole weekend around Ferraris, starting with Jean Louis' blue 348 Spider... The next morning, after staying at John's house, we made our to the FDC launch party... John drove the local neighborhood to warm up the car... Then he pulled over and we switched seats... He directed me out of the local area to coast, where i drove through Malibu, with the ocean right next to me, for about an hour... It was incredible... When we finally got to our destination, it was less than an hour before Bob Callahan had me in the driver's seat of his 355 Spider... What a day...!!!
Bought it. God, mid-life crises are fun. A lot of lucky kids out there I see. I am trying to remember the most awesome car I got to drive when I was 16 or 17. Probably a vette (my best friend's father's). I got to ride in a Ferrari when I was a kid. Probably 8 years old. I can still remember it - and the sound. It was a 308 I believe. Ferraris are like that, memorable when you cross paths with them. That's why I feel lucky to own one.
I remember the first time I drove a ferrari like it was yesterday. . . wait a minute, it was yesterday! got my 308gt4 yesterday, never having seen one or driven one or ever having driven or been in a ferrari; it was one of those "I gotta have one now" type of things. first impression, very cool; it even impressed the hell out my 17 year old son. even better, my wife who barely tolerates the fact that I have two other classics, and hit the roof when I bought an airplane, and then a larger plane, saw the car yesterday, and likes it and is glad I bought it. there is little higher accolade for me anyway. it sort of drives like a big go-cart; you can't see the hood and the noise is in the back; small sterring wheel like a go cart; did I mention the noise; had some shifter problems which I'm still working on, but all in all, it's an amazing car; and less than the cost of a honda accord. yes it seems like, and it was yesterday that started to experiences the joys (and tribulations) of driving a ferrari; thanks all for your comments and support. rick jaffe
A red 348ts when I was 18. The owner inherited it and he wasn't much of a car nut so he let me take the car any day for the whole day whenever I wanted That summer before college I borrowed the car about 6 times. He moved
