    I would disagree with that ---- not any chemical reactions / degradation processes going on in un-used / un-exposed motor oil. As long as the air-tight seal has not been opened, just shake it up vigorously, and I'll bet it will be fine and fresh as new.

    I'm no expert, but on a Miata forum, a tribologist posted this on the subject a couple of years ago regarding use of 7 year old oil:


    Engine oil in a bottle is normally considered good for about 5 years. The additive pack in oil is reactive to both itself and the lubricant, the bottle typically isn't totally impervious to the lighter fractions and anyone at Valvoline who said that they have made no advances in engine oil in the last 7 years should be fired. If nothing else, they have changed from API SM to SN (this may actually be SL oil). If you had NO OTHER CHOICE, be sure and agitate the bottle before using as some of the additive pack may have precipitated. On the other hand, the precipitate may not go back into solution. Oil in an engine crankcase at least gets heat cycled and agitated on every run.

    I certainly would not leave it in very long... ​
