My 355 has been exclusively serviced via a Ferrari dealer with Agip oils, it was a bit touchy hitting second gear at times especially down shifting from 3rd, oils were changed 3500 miles ago, trans oil came out clear so it was still fresh. I just put it Redline 75-90NS gear oil and now it shifts like butter in to second from 1st and 3rd and all the rest of the gears, major improvement, I know how some think if its Ferrari OE it has to be the best but this just shows as usual its not always the case, next I am replacing the Agip motor oil with Mobil 1.

I don't think it is fair to broadbrush Agip oils as inferior, but Redline 75-90NS gear oil is pretty fantastic stuff. Don't own an F-car, but that gear lube sure made my first 928 S4 "shift like butter" just as you describe.

At the same time, I wouldn't hesitate to switch from Agip to Mobil 1 for the engine either. Especially the 0W-40 (which now supercedes pretty much all previous recommendations for P-cars).

Thought I would add to my post again, just changed my motor oil (PITA on a 355) from dealer Agip to Mobil 1 Extended Protection 15 w 40 car seems to really like it, still have 100'+ degree outside temps here and my water temp is at least 5' cooler and oil temps 10' cooler from before consistently, big difference.

Hi JP, next time you change the engine oil use Redline 5-30 or 5-40 and see what you think. I have used their products for 20 years along with others and always change back to RL. Its harder to tell a difference between motors oils vs. gearbox difference but I think Redlines base stocks are of higher quality than others ie; Mobil 1 offering better lubrication for our expensive Ferrari engines. I run Mobil 1 in my car and haven't had it analyzed, but I've read many magazine comparisons resulting in Mobil 1 along with RL usually in the top running, so find your statement rather shocking.

Is there that much difference between Mobil1 and RL?

    Thanks

Someone should mention that Agip oils have not been the "official" Ferrari approved oils in a decade...been Shell.

BTW, Sarti, what country are you in? In the States, we can get Mobil 1 in 0w-40 and 15w-50....oh and a diesel application in 5w-40...everything else is a 20 or 30 weight max.

Hi Scott, Don't get me wrong Mobil 1 is fine I use it in my BMW. My thoughts on Redline in Ferraris is that looking at the base stocks that the two use it seems that Redline would be better for the high rpm that my 355 can reach, better shear strength. Mobil has changed their formula a few times over the years and seems that they have done it to save money, not that the product is better or worse it just that Redline started with the best and stayed with it. Also a comment on oils and the brand a person pics is somewhat subjective kinda like being a Ford or Chevy guy ie; they are both cars and get you from pt. A to pt. B fine. A good web site to go to for a thouogh look at various oils and more info than you will ever need about oil is bobistheoilguy.com.
I also ran across an interesting bit of info on mobil 1 in my 355, I had slight drip in the rear main seal when I changed to mobil 1 one time, changed back to Redline and the drip went away, go figure. This has nothing to do with the quality of either product just thought it interesting. Also have a friend with 512 that ran Mobil in it and it woiuld use oil, changed back to conventional oil and the consumption went down considerably, again go figure.
I guess when it comes down to it after all the research I have done on synthetic oil I prefer Redline in my Ferrari. Regards, Vern

Factory people were unofficially warning us off Agip Gear oil in 1992.

They knew it was trash then.

#22127 now thrives on Royal Purple in everything!

They have a coolant treatment also......

I agree Redline and even Amsoil are nice synthetics......

Mobil 1 is mostly PAO basestock (Group IV). Redline is mostly Polyol Ester basestock (Group V). Redline is heavily additized. Both are very good lubricants. Look at "Virgin Oil Analysis" at http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/

It's hard to find HERE, and it's made right outside of town in Porter, TX.!

    Good, thanks....

The local Ford dealer stocks the whole line, of all places.....they LOVE to see me..

"I have this lil' horsie, see?? Just like that 'stang over there, down boy!"

There was an AGIP office here in town, as well but related to exploration....

I switched from Mobil1 15w-50 to NAPA 15w-50 and have noticed absolutely no difference in almost a year of use. The NAPA oil is made by Ashland so I trust it as a quality product, and it's 20% less expensive than Mobil1.

Does anyone else have experience with the NAPA motor oil?

Use whatever makes ya feel good, but in the grand scheme of things, what does 20% mean in one year? Figure that Mobil 1 may cost $7 per quart...how many oil changes are you doing in a year? Two maybe? So 8 times 7 dollars is $56...20% savings is $11.20 or $22.40 per year. Personally, I doubt if it makes that much difference one way or another...but I wouldn't sweat $20 in making a decision on which oil I used...

Ashland, is Valvoline Oil. There may not be a difference, but $11.00 more per oil change is worth it to me. Kendall at one time offered free oil analysis when you purchased their synthetic oil. Advance Auto uses Kendall.
Oil is Oil, just change it.

If you had a oil related failure, who would make good Mobil/Exxon or
NAPA. I doubt NAPA would pay for an engine repair.
    my 2 cents

Amsoil for the engine (0w-30, 5w-30, 5w-40) and Redline for the gearbox (75w-90NS). Do your homework and you will find there is nothing else like them.

    Hello from Germany,

I use Agip Rotra MP 80-90 in my 308 gearbox since 10 years and 45.000 kms without any problems.
Even second gear works when cold.
Also Agip Sint 15W-40 for the engine. No leaks, no increased oil consumption.

    Best Regards

    Martin
