I want to buy a new property for my family and do not want a bigger mortgage............and am toying with the idea of letting my beloved Dino go to a new custodian.......it hurts bad but i never really use it mainly due to not wanting to spoil its condition, which is pathetic i know, but this is just one reason why i might as well sell it.
I am looking for your views as to what you think i should pitch the car at?
    Briefly;-
07528 was imported to UK in late 73 and registered early 74. GTS with flares but not ordered with chairs ( as mentioned in Matthias's book)
I bought the car in 2004, it having been stood in a garage for 19 years.
The car was totally stripped, bare metalled and started again. Engine and gearbox rebuilt by Ron Lusardi at Superformance.
Every part either rebuilt/replated/replaced etc. New HC pistons (car had done under 60k from new) Cams re profiled etc You name it ,it was done.
Car has BSM ignition system and has just done it's first 1000 miles from rebuild and i have just given it it's first service to include reshimming of valves, all fluids, timing chain adjustment, brakes etc.
4 new XWX's were put on car and it comes with new replica (alloy)set of 4 campy's plus the original 5 (magnesium) campy's (refurbed)
Books, leather wallet, jack and tool roll with a few of the original tools (only one original spanner) but all excellent condition are with the car.
Will be heartbreaking to see it go but where do you see it value wise?

Well i can vouch for how well its been restored and looked after as i have worked on it several times with graham.

I do feel for you as i know how much you love the car. I guess you have thought long and hard about it. Pity after all that hard work and you will not get the benefit. Sorry if its sounds like i'm rubbing it in but i thought you would sell your left nut before the car:)

Havent a clue on the price either but its got to be over £175K

If you are comfortable with letting the car go then now is the time. Prices are silly high and will likely go back down in the somewhat short term future. Sorry but I do not have a crystal ball as to where the top is and what will happen in the future but I have seen the current trend with Dino's repeated with other cars which makes now an ideal time to cash out.

No crystal ball here either. Dinos are truly fabulous and it must be the prettiest road car ever made. I'm sure you'll be very sorry to see it go. As you're only selling it to realise some money, perhaps you could ease the pain by buying a mint 355 or 360 with the proceeds and put the money you have left towards the house.

I was sorry to read your post. If you must sell, then you must do so. Your Dino looks great, and I agree that now would be a good time to sell, and perhaps you will find something else that would be fun to own and drive, but that would be quite a bit less expensive - maybe a big Healey or 3.8 Mk 2 Jag? Anyway, if you do sell, please don't forget your friends here in the 206/246 section.

i hope you decide not to sell and find other means to the end you desire for your family.

if you must sell, could you buy a nice boxer and re-deploy the balance of the dino procedes to the family obligation? a boxer may not be a dino but a wonderful car that will keep you in the semi vintage ferrari world.

    just a thought.

    best,

    pcb

i am not a dino market value expert but i would suspect that your car would trade for in excess of $250k USD. Am I wrong?

Graham, I understand your agony. Decisions like this is never easy. But I think you are doing the right thing. You are simply locking in the gains you have made in the car, and perhaps the existing house as well. As any financial professional will tell you, taking profit is never wrong. It is in fact what separates the men from the boys in the financial world (or so I am told). Besides, there will always be other nice cars available - Dinos or others - in the future.

Regarding the value, from looking at the photos and reading your description it appears to me that this is one of the few Dinos which really does merit a price of well over $300,000 (£192,000). I hope you will get more than that. Right hand drive GTS with flares and Campys like yours, in concours condition, do not grow on trees, exactly. No doubt you will be contacted by brokers or dealers who can offer a more exact valuation.

I also hope that, if you sell it, you will continue to stay in touch and contribute on this forum. We would miss your opinions and comments otherwise. Once a Dino guy, always a Dino guy - with or without a car - I believe.

If you don't drive it, sell it. Buy a poster. Better yet, sell it and buy a car that you WILL drive, like a 308 carb car; you'll have plenty of $ left over, better performance, a gorgeous car in its own right, and these cars ARE MEANT TO BE DRIVEN. Quit staring at the Dino, sell it, buy a 308 and your house and USE both.

    Graham,

I have been where you are.

I passed my car on to someone who enjoys it more than I ever did, and I have ZERO regrets.

If it makes sense to do a deal, do it. As to price, I can't help you.

Best of luck, do what's best for you and your family, you'll not regret it.

This sounds like a reasonable asking range. Financially, it does seem like the time to sell.

I'm in the last stages of a vintage Porsche restoration, though, and I can't imagine going through the whole process again without a fun classic car in the garage. Having a car that you know was restored properly is a unique ownership experience -- you have a proper car from the days when cars were machines, and you the bits underneath are all solid.

    Graham,

I would say you could sell your concours-perfect GTS and buy a "nice driver" quality GT for a lot less, but there aren't many of those around any more.

That's the problem with a perfect car-- you don't want to drive it because then it won't be perfect anymore.

Back when I was into 356 Porsches some of the Speedster guys said it was really best to have 2 of them-- one to show and one to drive.

Thanks for your imput guys........heart warming to know that you are all with me on this.

Have to say that Scotts post above is a really good idea and to that i am seriously looking at 308s.
I see that i can buy a beauty for 40K (30k last year!!!)

    Still pondering though..........Cheers All

    Good luck with the decision!

Seen thru the long view of history, an early 308 IS the 'next step" in lineage in historical timeline, and they are not crazy expensive....

What an awesome situation to work out right for what you were looking for.

Hopefully we don't see the car suddenly appear with the seats.

One basic question for us dumb US owners.....If you sell a car privately in the UK/EU, do you still have to pay the same tax rates/registration rates as if a car is sold publically?

I can answer that. There is no tax to pay on private sales in the UK.

Wow are you lucky in the UK. I just asked my accountant about this the other day and he said collectable items including cars are taxed at 31% and in Georgia the state claims another 6%. I would assume this tax is only on profit above purchase price and restoration costs if the car is restored. Hope he is wrong about this.

Yes, the tax would only apply to your profit. However, my understanding is that "upkeep" expenses do not count (replacement of things that break, maintenance, etc)
