I had been talking to these guys and was serious to the point of putting down a deposit. My plans were to go with a twin turbo 993 Porsche engine built for about 600hp. The car would then weigh about 1750lb.

Problem is the car accomodates a max driver height of 5' 11". I am 6' 2". Even with moving the pedals forward a bit and putting a Gurney bubble in the roof, I may not fit. Not only that, but the pedals are already forward of the front axl line. Moving them even further forward.... OUCH in any accident!

The Kraftwerkz guys in Australia also do a very nice 917 replica. I have been talking with them as well but not sure on the height issue as yet.

    I WANT a 917!

I believe the 917 at the Pelican parts open house with Brian Redman and the Vasek 917 / 908 Engines was a Kraftwerkz. Then again it might have been the real deal. I certainly couldn't tell with the exception of AP brakes instead of Porsche. Brian was wonderful to listen to and Pelican had put on a nice spread. The car and the engines rounded out the event. http://www.pelicanparts.com/swapmeet_pics/PelicanOpenHouse_2005/page1.htm

Either way it was a magnificent machine.

If you want to see how a 917 is made go to www.gunnarracing.com and take a look at their restorations (Click on projects, then on completed projects- Bob Thompson’s car is a frame up). What other shop has both Paul Newman and Derik Bell stopping by to take a look?

Fran at Race Car Replicas seems like a good guy. He is building a good reputation in the replica business. When another GT40 company folded, he stepped in and offered a great deal to the "customers" that got screwed by the other company. The P4, 917 and GT40 are yummy. It would be fun to build all three and rent a track for a day.

The car that started this thread is a Laser 917 isn't it?

    Tery,

after our conversation a couple of days ago we went to work to see what we can do to get you in the car, from recollection you have a longer torso and this would actually make life easier and we feel that we would be able to accomodate your proportions...not easily but we can do it and you would still be able to drive comfortably.....hope this helps.

Thanks for the compliments guys....we all work hard to provide good value and great service.

    Regards

    Fran....RCR

    Thanks Fran!

I just spoke at length with Fran and it does seem a 917 could be in my future! Fran is clearly an enthusiast who is into this through passion and not just money.

We also got to talking about his Lola T70 spider replica. GORGEOUS! Plus at about 2100lb in track trim and with a 500hp engine.... YUMMIE!

I will be staying in touch with the guys at RCR without doubt. It would be fantastic to get a NASA race class together for these cars. Replica T70 coupe, spider, 917, P4 and GT40 all together in a replica spec class..... how fun would that be?

The kraftwerk car is TOP NOTCH! I remember reading about them when they first started up, and you could build one so cheap....And when I heard that the one had been sold for $200k, I was in shock.
