I think I'm gonna blow. My dad has had his 355 spdr for about eigth months now, and due to insurance not insuring me, I haev never really driven it. Considering how much I love cars and the fact that there is an exotic in my driveway that I can't touch, I am slowly growing insane. Had anyone else ever been so close, yet so far from driving a car of their dreams?

I'm 35, married, 3 kids & a mortgage, and my Dad still won't let me drive his Corvette. So maybe I'm bitter.

I think you could still drive the ferrari as long as your Dad is in the passenger seat with you. You would be under his direct supervision and I don't believe insurance companies would have a problem with that.

But of course who wants to drive around town with your Dad in tow when your trying to pick up hot babes! :)

Hey, what would Speed Racer say?

I think maybe "Get over it" is a little harsh.

How about, "Please get over it."

Cubby, My wife is not on any of my auto insurance policies...her father is a auto dealer and she gets a car from him w/his insurance. My policies are for pleasure use only. If she were to have an accident in my vehicle (without me in it) she would still be covered...it's called "permissive use", i.e. I give her permission to operate my car.

Your situation may be the same...and it's your dad who doesn't want you anywhere near the car. If he has a specialty policy for the Ferrari, then noone under 25 can drive it (even a valet at a fancy restaurant).

How old are you...if you are not 25 and his insurance demands it, "please get over it".

I certainly understand where you're coming from!

In my high school and early college years, my Dad had a nice C4 vette, black, convertible. I was a pretty good kid, paid for my own college and good grades and all, so he liked me :). He would usually let me take it when I asked--to a small party, to the store, etc. There was never an issue, and gradually I don't think he really worried when I took it out. That said, any high schooler / young college person running around in a hot ride like that is going to attract a certain amount of trouble. I spun the vette out once... I just didn't know how to drive. Didn't know its limits. Nobody was around, no problems or anything like that... Took me about 10 minutes parked on the side of a road in some neighborhood to calm down though.

Now pardon me for saying so. And it depends on how old you are. But a riding around in a Ferrari 355 is probably not the best thing for you. You might get into trouble. No offense, but you sure as hell don't know to handle that machine at even 50% of its limits (nor do I, but I'm getting there...) :)

Now that said, if you've got your head screwed on right and priorities straight, then I don't see why your dad letting you drive in sparse areas with him in the passenger seat would be that big of a problem--it will help build trust, etc. It will probably also turn you on to Ferraris for a long time to come. Which if you don't blow it in school, might be something you can have of your own one day!

I was insured on my high-school / college car (old SAAB). I'm not sure if I was listed as an occasional driver on the vette or not. But state farm specifically notes that any licensed driver in a household associated with a car might drive that car... They factor it in.

So there's a huge difference between that and in not being insured at all, which if this is the case, probably means you shouldn't be driving the car under any circumstances.

How old are you? Why aren't you insured? Was there an "incident"? (We've all had incidents.) Or are you just too young?

Most of the similar policies I'm familiar with say that other drivers must have "10 years experience" which generally means from the time they get their first regular (solo) license. In most states that would mean more like 26 or 27 years of age.

I am a cheap b@stard and not willing to spend over 3k. :)

It is more Wayne's haunt and I do not want to be stepping on his toes. You did send a similar PM to Wayne right? That was my understanding. If not, I will talk to him about a resolution he thinks is fair.
Very busy times my friend, I am not even that active on Fchat anymore. :(
    Most definitely!
    You better believe it!

That's really bout it. Hope the family is doing well, both the living and the automotive. :) ;)

I say drive it around the corner and come back. It wouldn't hurt right? Nothing bad could possibly happen in that short amount of distance and time. You could also turn it on, sit in it, close your eyes and rev it and pretend your driving on a track.

Or you could put it on jacks, sit in it, turn it on, rev it and...err, nevermind. Buehler tried that already.

being 17, I'm just too young. I have no "incidents." Technically, I could "steal" it from the garage. This way, if I got into an accident, my dad's insurance would cover it- as long as he charged me for theft. Hmmmm...ballsy.
