Hey guys, my school club, SWAP (student world awareness program), are going to try and hold a charity run to raise money for a hospital in South Africa to combat AIDS. I was wondering if you guys thought it would be a good idea, because its loosely based right now (whenever the snow thaws really). We were thinking of a suggested entry donation ($75-$100?), and I would like to know what you guys think, and how many people could come. The run would meet up at John Jay High School in Cross River, NY, and the run route would really be up to you guys, as long as we don't terrorize to many neighborhoods...

Feedback on this idea would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Kieran

You'll find lots of prior experience with such things on here.
Never a "bad" idea, per se, and your cause is certainly a noble one. It's the execution that matters. A few people on here should be able to help you with good logistical ideas.

Good luck. Depending on date/time, I'd likely join.
    Best,
    J.

id be willing to help with any of my cars. Just give me a heads up as to the date. Maybe we should make magnets up for the side of the doors or something. Also maybe a police escort might be in line for an event like this?

A cool idea might be to do something like you donate 25 cents a mile or something, kinda like how BMW does it.

PM John (niptuck) and Hovik, and maybe Ludmilla. They all have organized runs before (John and Ludmilla have done some for charities I know).

Shivam's a great guy, too, but he can be a bad influence :D (J/K)

EDIT: One other thing, helping reduce AIDS in South Africa is a very good cause, especially since, I have heard, S.A. has the world's highest infection rate. However, if I know this board at all, just be prepared for lots of people to ask why you aren't doing something about AIDS here in the US. I am NOT saying you shouldn't do it for S.A. -- just noting that it's likely people may feel a little more ready to participate in something a little more domestically-oriented. Me, I'm there for anything having to do with slowing the spread of AIDS *anywhere*... Either way, I think you'll get a good turn out. People on this section are generally very good and consciencious.

I'll be sure to ask the officer at our school about the escort, but only to the highway or something...we want to have fun, no? (We'll keep the licenses though! :D)

I guess we can see how many people are willing to do this, then decide on the donation rate.

    Thanks!

Thanks, I'll get in contact with them

    haha, I get it...

Ok, I might move it to June then...The money is going with a girl who goes to a South African hospital over the summer. Last year I think we raised 15k altogether. The point really is to have it before we get stressed with exams, you know?

You took my words right out of my mouth. I had the same argument this week with the wife.

Yes, any charity is a good thing. But why cant we do a good thing for the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA???? We live here, we eat here, we work here and apparently some go to school here.

We need to cure our country of all that afflicts us. Then we can save the world!

Just my 2 cents.....thanks and good luck with your event!

    PAY CUTS FOR COPS NOW!!!

On April 1st I will be organizing a charity run that demands (nay INSISTS) that police officers take an across the board 23% paycut. The saved revenue should then be used to build a giant wall between the US and Canada (because as Lewis Black claims "that's where the cold comes from"). So on April 1st Remember -- cops have guns and badges, why do they need pay and health insurance too!

Wait, does an AIDs run mean you are for AIDs or against it? Personally I'm on the fence on the issue.

In regards to your run, most people choose to donate to charities privately. If you want to get people to do join it has to be more then just a "good cause." You need some sort of hook, eg a visiting celeb, some crazy route, or a beautiful and usually unavailable location. Nip's event is good because it's in Manhattan and a ton of cool cars come. I don't care if the money goes to help retarded midgets with add -- I still wanna have fun spending my money!

PS - don't forget the tax forms so people can file all donations on their taxes!

PPS - Barry did you check the thread for dinner on Feb 2nd?

I can see where your coming from...I asked Jim, but he said not this year, maybe next if I do this annually. There are plenty of celebs around here, so I'll see who I can get in touch with.

I'm going to see what I can pull out of this at our meeting on Monday, k? This is still an idea, I just wanted feedback.

Well, IMO, America has a government that can stop funding stupid things (COUGHwarCOUGH) and put more help towards this. South Africa needs a lot more help with it. Besides, my friend works at a SA hospital over the summer, and she brings the food and money we collect with her there.

    Thanks

+1,000,000. But I think we should keep this argument to the Politics & Religion thread, where the real Fchat flag wavers live....

This thread is about a good cause. Good luck with it. If and when it happens, let us know.

Due to the Greenwich concourse, I'm gonna have to cancel June 3rd. The dates are all not to great from there, so I will try to hold this in November.

    Thanks for your guy's help!
