Ok. Had another rattle this morning on my way to a car show. When I got home I started checking things in the back to see if anything is loose (ie heat shields, exhaust valves, trim covers) and I noticed almost all my two airbox cover screws were loose. This is weird because I just tightened them maybe 250 miles ago. I have the standard not carbon fiber air boxes on my 430. Now I didn’t “crank” down on them before I just made them snug, which is the same thing I just did today when I found them loose.

So my question is…. How tight should I make these screws? Is it common for them to loosen up? Should I use some sort of locktite on them or a special washer or something to keep them from loosening up?

    Thanks,
    Cheers,
    Corey

I suggest just dragging a file over a couple of the threads to give them some grip.

A very small amount of blue locktite. If you use too much, even the blue stuff, you won’t get it loose.

I had my rear engine bay panels rattling a bit

Took the screws out, cleaned them, reinserted with a drop of orange loctite and everything was solid

I had to remove them again for a different job, they came out with a touch of force (they were snug which was good), cleaned the threads, re-inserted again with a drop of orange, all standing pat.

I thought Loctite only comes in purple, blue, red and green. Permatex Orange?

I have same issue. definitely common. In fact, almost all the fasteners back their rattle out! And I have all the carbon panels so I'm very reluctant to snug too much. Flate Plane Crank FTW!

    Hear you

I used a liquid electrical tape from harbor freight (also good for repairing cracked rubber wires harnesses, several layers) on the underside of the washers to avoid scratches, and the permatex allows you to get it just tight enough to avoid rattling without having to overtighten

A friend with a Stadale had his come loose on the track. Air filter came out and caught fire. Next thing he knew was the marshall's flagging him quite expectantly. Burned the engine and bonnet pretty good before they got it out. I check mine all the time. Maybe, I'll locktite for peace of mind.

Thanks for the timely ― in my case ― heads-up of those screws. Did a reasonableness test and found loose ones. Used the info about Pematex Orange when reinstalling.

    Nice!

Recommend cleaning the crews of the old permatex when you remove and reinsert next time for proper fitment.

They go in much easier and will seal better.

I actually used a razor blade to get them clean

Update, if you use the permatex threadlocker, use blue, med strength, prob better than orange (high strength)

Was tougher to get them out this time having made a really good seal
