New Guy (Robbie) here, I have just become unvirginized ... first post. This may be a fairly pedestrian question but I am attempting to restencil my air box (1988 328 GTS - 076289). I bought one of those 2-piece stencils on e-Bay .. why 2-piece I'll never know. It has FERRARI and then the filter data on it. However, I could swear that my car only had FERRARI .. no filter logo. Was I imagining things? (It has been "erased.") I've seen both with and without .. but I'd like to be authentic. If it is just FERRARI, is it the same size as the one with the filter logo or is it bigger? And if bigger, is there another source? (other than sending it away for the $100+ treatment). I've done a search on this question in the ever-informative Ferrari Chat archives but am still uncertain. Thanks for the info. Robbie
when i re-did mine i didn't use the ufi as i run a k&n filter. so i used their sticker. concourse be damned!!
For your 328 just "Ferrari" is correct. The stencil you purchased is correct for the 308. I have the wrong one on my 308 which would be correct for you. Got it? See pic (looks a little uneven due to photo resizing to post here). Image Unavailable, Please Login
Robbie: I have a stencil that isnt right for my 308. It is 5 1/8 long from the start of Ferrari to the end of s.p.a., and the UFI filter info is 2 3/4 long. What I need is 3 ¾ and 2 respectively. I was thinking of using it anyway, but if we each have what the other needs we can trade.
Why is it 2-piece? Because otherwise you'd have a problem with letters with "holes" getting filled in, like o, a, and e.
I have searched for this on ebay, but I can't find an auction. Can you point me in the right direction for a 328 stencil? Thanks. Gene
Robbie! Welcome to FChat! You have *GOT* to come out to our weekly Santana Row gathering some time. Saturday mornings, 8:30-10:30ish in the back-left parkinglot. Always a great turnout, and a neat group of people too... Check the NorCal section for details each week. Again, welcome! Aaron
Impacto .. thanks for the pic .. now if I can only stencil mine as neatly as yours. GTHill ... We've learned that the stencil on e-Bay is for a 308 with both Ferrari and the filter logos. I just went out and measured the faint white dots in the crackle finish on my air box and it seems that the length of FERRARI on the 328 is the same as on the 308 (i.e., 3-3/4") but there is no filter logo which makes it more centered on the surface than it would be on a 308. (Any 328 owner please verify) Re: e-Bay .. I hate that bidding crap so when I saw the stencil there I gave it one shot, got outbid, and said screw it and e-mailed the seller. He sold me one for about $25 including shipping which was less than one sold for on e-Bay. Go figure. I don't recall his e-mail address (sorry). John Henry ... It looks like your logo is bigger (5-1/8") than it should be for a 328 (I know, who wants a 100 point car and also drive it?). I'd be glad to loan mine to you after I finish .. assuming that I don't get frustrated and rip it to pieces and send the whole thing in for the $100 fix. However, if a 328 owner confirms that the 5-1/8 length is correct then we can do a straight trade. Aaron .. I'll check out the Santana Row gig, thanks for the info. This web site looks like it could be much too habit forming ... my wife may have to do an intervention one of these days. Thanks all for the great feedback. Robbie
You're only on post 3 my friend, give it time-you will soon need to call the help line. Really though, welcome, enjoy, and have fun. This should be interesting-I too need to do the "stencil" but stencils scare me, I can never get them straight, I also didn't know which one to buy.
Thanks for the offer, Robbie, but I'll get one on eBay. I'm told they are offered occasionally. That way I'll have my own to rip to pieces when I get frustrated!
Might want to spray a nice base coat of matte black over the lid before you start. Do yourself a favor and trim it down to a manageable size. You can use tape and newspaper to cover the rest of the lid. Do yourself another favor and spray the underside of the stencil with a light coat of 3M adhesive to give it less chance of lifting while you are applying your white paint. you will have to do this twice so don't go overboard with paint on the first part of the stencil. hope this helps
I cannot claim to have had any success with the EBay stencil. I tried it multiple times after paying $60 for the damn thing and the results were just awful. I finally caved and sent the airbox top to ICP for the core exchange. They sent me the one with the logo for the 328 claiming that it was correct for the 308. I protested and he claimed that there were no more airbox tops in stock and it would be at least 9 months before he had any more. It's only a 1/4 point concours deduction for the wrong airbox logo so I decided to live with it. Anyone want to buy a slightly used 2-piece stencil from Ebay? Image Unavailable, Please Login
Dont know if this would help, but heres a thread discussing airbox stencils and techniques for use. In particular, in post #29 Paul Spurgas gives some very detailed instructions. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=74188
Yes, Verell did the scan, and I created a vector graphic so that stencils or vinyl decals could be made.
Thanks all for the stencil info .. I may look for a practice surface before embarking on application to the real thing. The idea of messing it up .. respraying it black, trying again .. etc. etc. has little appeal. I kept envisioning Guido in Modena sitting in a room stenciling air boxes and thought I might be able to duplicate that. Now I suspect I have underestimated the task .. but what are my options? .. having no logo is certainly one. Hmmmm. Something to contemplate. If this has me bugged, wait until something important comes along. I'll keep you posted on my air box dilemma. Robbie
What about you guys having the logo posted above printed on a vinyl graphic and useing a "sticker" it certainly would last longer and be clean looking. i know its not "authentic" but would be a better thing for a driver car I would think
Here's my recent air box restoration (85 Mondial Euro). I started with this: Image Unavailable, Please Login
Then powder coated it with black fine texture powder from Pro Powder And Abrasive Supply: Image Unavailable, Please Login
After that, I wanted to add the graphics. So I gave one of my co-workers the art and she created new adobe illustrator artwork and cut the stencil out of vinyl. I used measurements from FerrariChat to get it in the right spot (close enough for me): Image Unavailable, Please Login
