I'm having a bit of trouble with the a/c on my 400i and was wondering if a few of you might know the following answers: 1) Anyone know how many pounds of freon it is supposed to hold? 2) I suspect the high & low pressure switches may not be operating properly. Over 2,000 or so rpm the a/c blows cool but at idle the compressor won't come on. Does anyone know a crossref for these switches? I sure appreciate the help Dave '80 400i
I would suggest you get a set of AC gages on the compressor and see what you have. Usually there is an instruction book which tels you what pressure ranges you should have . Also if the compressor doesn't turn on either it has an electrical problem (check for voltage at the compressor clutch) or you are low on freon. I would start here and see where it takes you.
You first need to know if it has dual air or not. The 2 systems have different capacities. One of the very early sections in the owners manual has a listing of capacities, including freon. Have a look there. It will be right next to a picture of the compressor.
