Anyone know of a source for the "FM 10416" air filters or alternatives? Also need to replace the mangled soft rubber seal for the air box cover. Thanks! BTW survived the storm, no major damage, except to me after helping a neighbor cut up and haul to the street a downed large pine! Worn out! Godspeed! Dave
Dave, thank God about the good fortune against Gustav. Air filters for the carbed cars should be replaced using a K&N. Size the internal opening from the tube leading to the air box and place the air filter just in that inlet. The original filter does nothing except filter air at that point. The rest of it, does nothing. Good Luck
We are the primary supplier of these filters in this country. They are available in our ebay store here http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350095651732 While anything is possible... I am not convinced without further research that the filters in C/4s and 400C cars only have air pass thru them at the incoming tip. I will concede that this is probably the place where more of the heavy particles build up as the air comes into the air box.
You are correct Lee. While the end facing the snorkle will naturally get the most dirt the entire area of the filter material has air space around it and allows air flow. A fliter stuck in the snorkle would have considerably less surface area, would clog faster and restrict airflow dirty or clean. Those air boxes were hardly a terrific design but neither was a bunch of side draft carbs placed directly over the exhaust manifolds. If lower cost air filters are what is desired that could be more easily achieved by installation of a Chevrolet 350 and a down draft carb.
According to the side panel on a UFI box the same filter is also used in Volkswagon K70, which I think is the micro bus. How humble and inexpensive those must be.
Yep, I have done a bit of air box design in the past, and am in agreement with Lee and Rifleman. A lot more to all this than most people think. But.............how cool what is a K70 Micro bus??? With a good Chianti in hand, I will search the net. Thanks for all the responses! Godspeed! Dave
Close... but no cigar. The air filter you are referring to is not the filter this thread is discussing. The 365 GTC/4, 365 GT4 2+2, and Carb 400 use a very special air filter that does not fit any mass produced cars. However the Volkswagen filter you are referencing is indeed the same UFI number for the 400i and like the VW the 400i air filters ($26.50 ea FNA) list for about 10 % of the Carb filters ($263.17 ea. FNA) I understand trying to save a buck and there are a few cross references out there that are legitimate ways to save; but IMO the time you spend hunting down the mostly "teaser" cross references is likely worth more than the savings they offer. Usual scenario is to save a few bucks and have a questionable non original part & worst case you spend a lot of time to risk seriously affecting your car. And what about the long term issues. When you go to sell your car what is the next buyer going to think when he gets in here and looks at these posts? I know I've seen some Pep Boys test mules in here that I would not feel comfortable buying. That is unless the price was heavily discounted and then where did that savings go?
