I am looking at a 95 355 with about 37k on the clock. It has a stack of maintanance records. Twice in its life, it has had its Air flow Meters replaced. Both times at a cost of around 1100.00. Is this a part that needs regular attention?

That is highly unusual. Either it was done under warranty as part of some other problem that defied identification or they got contaminated by either ingesting something or blowback.

Not normal for the MAF to go out.
