Air pump belt has been removed and a check valve has rusted thru on the frount bank. Question is, will it hurt anything by not running the pump? Notice strong gas smell at startup and was wondering if this might be some of the cause or is this just normal smell upon startup ? Thanks

I'm just in the process of remedying this same situation on my '78 GTS. When I got it, the air pump had been removed, and the air check valves were rusted. The problem is that without that valve in place, it allows exhaust gases to escape through the injector pipes, which acts like a leak in the manifold. You are probably smelling unburned gas coming out the injector pipes at start up. IMHO, leaving the air pump disconnected and running the car with a rusted out check valve is not good idea.

The thing to do is to remove the injectors and cap them off. There is a thread in the 308/328 forum on injector plugs. You need to buy the plugs with the extensions to fill the injector hole to prevent whistling. They are not expensive and it is not a difficult job to remove the pipes and put in the plugs. And once you remove the injectors and the air pump, you can also remove the related controls and vacuum lines and cap those things off. If you take a good look at your engine, you'll see how it all goes together and removing the control system will make sense.

Hope that helps. I'm sure some of the QV folks can chime in on doing this.

the check valve prevents the gas from coming back up you need to replase the check valve and get the belt back ON the pump. if you do not run the pump then take the air injection hoses and pipes of and plug the headers.

If you want to replace the check vavles, they are the same as a 1969 Chevy.
The ones from Chevy are black now, but some aftermarket ones are still zinc, but they have a slightly different shape.
BTW, that and light bulbs and tire valve caps are about the only thing common Ferrari to Chevy!!
