I remember reading somewhere that airbags have a useful life of about ten years and need to be replaced at that point to ensure safe operation. Does anyone know if that is correct? I've searched and haven't found where I read it again.

My 96 Dodge clearly stated in the owners manual that the airbag was certified for 10 years, and should be replaced after that point. That's one reason I chose to trade it in.

Volvo puts the expiration in the door jam.

I suspect, just like expiration dates on medicines, they are prob good for a lot longer, but by putting an expiration it ends the liability at that particular time, brilliant!

They should be replaced every time they go off, duh.

I found it in the owner's manual under the service required table. It's there. I asked my dealer about it while my car was being serviced and was told it is "suggested" but no one does it.

i was in a car wreck in (at the time about 11 year old car) no prior accidents, no idea about the airbag life. but it went off just fine, car was a W124 Mercedes, however in my other car a 1988 W126 mercedes that thing was in about 4 different wrecks (all of which were varying "damage") and the airbags never went off.

ha! ive only been in 1 accident ever(E500 benz), the 4 in the other car (88 300SEL)were my parents(while using my car), 1 my dad hit a deer going 80+ MPH, 2 my mom got hit in the back while she was going about 20 and the other person hit her going 60 i think?, 3 was a sideswipe against my mom and it banged up the front left pretty bad 4 was an "off-road" adventure that my mom took while driving and using her cellphone, she hit a "rock" i later saw the rock and it was no rock, it was a damn boulder about 50mph

those SELs are built like tanks though

I like Cessna's creative stepped training program for the Mustang that is tailored to each pilot. You don't have to do a one-fits-all approach all at once. You can transition to co-pilot, then to pic with a co-pilot then to single pilot if you want to.

They did this on 'Fifth Gear' a few years back, on a car about 13 years old... it went off fine, and they pretty much said "don't worry about it".
