The Ferrari/UFI script atop the airbox is mostly gone. Any hints or sources for this? You guys are going to be sorry you let me on your playground...

We don't know what car you have.

For the 308i, they sometimes show up on ebay.
You can probably get it for many cars on italiancarparts.com
Right now there's a thread about the 308i stencil here in the 308 section. Although I didn't see it on a quick scan.

P.S.- you're going to be sorry if you don't fill out your profile!

I think there's a guy who sells these on ebay. I don't see any on there right now, but one sold recently.

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ferrari-308-328-Airbox-restoration-lettering-stencil-/140807786708?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item20c8cc50d4&vxp=mtr#ht_500wt_1182

Not mine and have not seen them, so I cannot vouch. Pretty cheap though. Maybe worth a try.

Lots of sources for this search my friend. There is a source with stencils on eBay that some get good results with, I'm going to try shortly. Silk screener might do better then there is painting the box itself.

There's an fchat member in hong kong that made silkscreen stencils - I bought one a while back but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Cant recall his screen name at the moment but a search should bring it it

Previous threads made it sound like the eBay stencils were pretty tough to get good results with.

I bought/tried the stencil with no luck at all. Attempted it 3 times, each time cleaning off the white paint and reprepping the lid. I'm told that people have managed to do a good job but I'd like to see a close up pic to verify that. I just gave up and shot a fresh coat of black wrinkle and let it go at that. I'd like to have it look oem if someone comes up with a way to do that that isn't insanely expensive - like the $1000 replacement air intake hose for the '89 328! ;)

I have heard of silk screening for as long as I can remember but I don't really know what that is. Guess I should find out!

Oh, if anyone wants to try the stencil, I'll see if I can find it. You can have it for free - I'll even pay the postage.

Italian Car Parts has a nice core/exchange program for the airboxes, wherein they come back with all of the OEM graphics. I'll likely do that, eventually.

We're going to be ever sorrier if you don't learn to use the search function. This has been covered in at least a dozen or so threads although to be fair that applies to almost any question barring the most technical. The stencil on e-bay or whatever source seems to be a solution that rarely works but it is cheap so lots of people give it a try. At the other end of the spectrum is the Italian Car Parts deal where you send them the top of your airbox and they repaint it the correct black and apply the white lettering. I've not seen any complaints about their results but it costs about $130.00. It's a typical "Hamlet" type of question "to do or not to do" the job yourself. Similar to timing belts which lots of people on this board have done themselves. All depends on your skill and bravery.

"I've not seen any complaints about their results but it costs about $130.00."

Their site now says $229 for that if I read it right. I MIGHT have considered 130 but since I am not interested in concours competition, $229 puts the airbox lid firmly in the "It can just stay wrinkle finish black" category! :)

Ouch! I hadn't checked recently. Wonder why the $100 increase? My car's not concourse although it's getting there slowly. I wouldn't consider the Italian Car Parts deal until the rest of my engine is spotless, all hoses, fuel lines, etc. replaced and some brand new paint or powdercoat on the plenum.

I am also going to send my box out to be repainted. The stencil is infuriating to use, we must have gone through a whole can of black wrinkle paint because the stencil never worked for us.

The silkscreen process (mentioned long ago) is the way to go, considering the nooks and crannies in the graphics. I'm just going to let ICP do it and be done with it :)

An update to an old thread.

Today I once again tried to get a decent "Ferrari" out of that Ebay stencil for my 328. I tried it SIX, count 'em, 6) times. I tried every method that has been discussed - painting black through the stencil first to "seal" the edges, using hairspray on the stencil to do the same, using spray adhesive on the stencil, etc etc etc.

After five attempts, washing off the white with lacquer thinner and respraying the lid flat black each time, on the 6th attempt I finally ended up with what looks decent from a few feet away but is still nowhere near as sharp is it should be. If you are just looking at the engine bay it looks OK but if you are a Ferrari person you would know immediately that it's one of those ebay stencil attempts.

Oh well, I guess it'll do for now...The pic looks better than the real thing! :)

This is definitely helpful information. The faded lettering on my car's airbox has been bugging me, but I figured maybe it was better to leave it alone than to try the stencil option. I've got the same problem with trying to decide whether I should use touch-up paint on the (very few, of course...) paint chips on my car. I'm inclined to leave things as is.

    I know the frustration well!
I eventually got a reasonable effect by using a white indelible felt tip pen but completely gave up on trying to get the very small writing (make of air box after the word Ferrari) to look any good.

Yeah - I can't imagine getting that part to look decent with that stencil. At least on the '89 328 (US version, anyway), all that was originally on the air cleaner was "Ferrari." That was hard enough to get a decent looking job. By "decent," I mean that it looks OK from a few feet away as you generally look at the engine compartment.

I created digital vector artwork several years ago that allows a vinyl sign shop to cut you vinyl letters, or as a stencil. Just check what format your sign shop wants and I'll be glad to send it to you. I've got one of the ebay stencils around here to... never used it.

My airbox is gone now anyway since that's where my supercharger sits. :)
