I have an 86 Testarossa which had the usual fan issue of only high speed when speed control on max. Rebuilt speed control with new pots, and BD238 transistor. I fitted a MJ802 30 amp NPN transistor on large fan heatsync and installed in the airduct leaving original in place.
It ran perfectly for several days and then failed. On testing fan by disconnecting behind fuse panel it runs well for a few minutes at 5.4 amps and then the current climbs dramatically as though it has shorted windings or similar. This testing was done with confirmed fresh air vent open.
I can not see any way to access the fan without removing the whole dash and aircon module.
Can anyone suggest a method of access less dramatic.

    Thanks Paul

HVAC unit is glued and riveted together. Not meant to be serviced but can be done. I once found an OTC fan motor that fit so can be done.

Ditto on the fan details. I have a very similar situation and story. I could for the last several years hear the fan bearing rattleing after things had heated-up but it continued to function. Then on a long trip to Mondipalooza the bearings gave a scream and the fan stopped. I turned it off and have not touched it since.

I thought to have read several years ago on Fchat that the fan motor was the same as BMW 528i of 1988 but cannot find this info now. Can you recall your OTC source? Thanks in advance.
I have my 1990 Mondial T dash out and the HVAC unit is hanging by the heater hose and the a/c heat exchanger connections. I hope to remove it in the next days if things warm up a bit.

IMHO, there is no other way to access the fan motor except by removal of the dash and the HVAC unit. The dash removal is not particularly difficult it is just long and tedious (and you find a lot of "while I am in there...").

If it's the same as a 308 (probably is), the equivalent SPAL fan is the 008 series, the most powerful of which is the 008-A54-02, which has over 500CFM (can't remember), but draws a lot of amps at that number. There are less powerful versions, but you need the 008 housing to fit, at least on a 308 where the fans are hard up against the wheel tub. Even then, you have to modify the openings in the housing to fit (slightly different shape). Have a look at the SPAL website.

Don't have that but I just went to auto electrical shop and thumbed through a catalog until I found one of the correct dimensions.
