They all have nicknames, some not so complimentary. I'll start with some common names, the answer would be the official designation of the craft, military or civilian. These are all for the same aircraft, Barge Clunk Slow But Deadly Speedy Three (a later version)
OK - That was pretty easy A simple Goggle seach if you didn't know already A Douglas SBD-5 Dauntless, Military - Navy How about the "Lead Sled"?
Lead Sled has been applied to the following because; 'Lead Sled' refers to an unmaneuverable aircraft, possibly with a poor climb performance. McDonnell F3H Demon Republic F-84 Republic F105 Lockheed SR-71 Boeing RC135U
With Google this probably too easy, New airplane. The nicknames are as follows; Bantam Bomber Heinnaman's Hot Rod Mighty Mite Scooter Skooter Skyhog Tinker Toy
Correct, Skyhawk it is. Here is a less obvious name, American A/P mentioned on this board already. Taivaan Helmi (Sky Pearl) (What a laugh!)
How about two aircraft of different vintages, both from the same manufacturer, and both nicknamed "Turkey".
That's the WWII Finnish Bomber "Brewster Buffalo". Also called: Pylly Walteri (Bustling Walter) Ok how about these: *FRED (Fantastic Ridiculous Economic Disaster) *S.O.B. 2nd Class (that's "Son of a ***** ", but the auto-censor here, killed it...) *Speedy Three and an easier one too... : *Flying Washboard
Grumman F-14 Tomcat Grumman TBF Avenger Not bad.... Had to work for that one. And don't forget : Turkey Vulture Genus - Cathartes aura
The F-105 was an honest 1500 MPH airplane at sea level and a helluva rocket until the engine quit.......then it was a lead sled. Several names seen on them ; Polish Glider, Flying Anvil, and of course, Lead Sled. A great airplane by Kartvelli.
No takers ? ? Hints: 1) Lots of stars here 2) Aw Hell....... Dive! 3) adjective for : invulnerable to fear or intimidation 4) cubed, (as in "to the third power") .
And the A-7 SLUF (Short Little Ugly F***er) How about a thread for "official names that are (almost) never used" and the names that are used. (e.g. A-10 Thunderbolt II/Warthog)
Dismissed by a senior US Navy official as 'The F7U was dangerous, period.' I never understood why so many early jets were built so under powered for their size in that era. They all knew how much thrust, or lack of, these little bitty engines put out (on a good day) and still wrapped a big multi-task plane around it. Design by committee I guess. I have always subscribed to the "make it as light as possible and cram the biggest engine in it you can" philosophy. Mileage would suck but at least it would "unstick"
Thats pretty good... hadn't heard it before The B-1 has long been called the Bone.... I was advised not to call crewmembers "boners"
