I heard a story back at Grumman about a squadron who didn't like their C.O. When he was to take a Panther on a cross-country trip (perhaps to meet with his superiors), someone in the squadron decided to turn the venturi tube that evacuated the relief tube by 180 degrees. As the C.O. was preparing to land, he decided to evacuate the contents of the holding tank. But with the venturi turned around, instead of leaving the airplane, those contents came right back in his face! Needless to say, he was pissed.....

Sorry for the rather dirty nature of this photo, but it was scanned from a framed enlargement hanging on my bedroom wall! (If I ever find the slide that it was made from, I'll post that.)

This was taken at the EAA fly-in at Arlington, WA, either in 1979 or 1980, at dusk. I believe that the aircraft is a Pietenpol.

I must have met you somewhere at those gatherings. I never missed them then. That airplane is a Pietenpol airframe but with a Cont. 65. Doesn't fly anything like a real Pietenpol. Aircamper.

I don't know who owns this gray Stearman but it was a really, really nice one and it's not a color scheme I see very often. Just a beautiful plane all around.

What a hodgepodge of mistakes! I'm sorry but that airplane is a mess of markings. First, the stars on the wings don't match the insignia on the fuselage, 1942 style on the wings and 1943 style on the fuselage. Second the there was only one 1942 star on the wings, upper left and lower right. The fuselage star is not centered in the space between the wings and the tail. There was never a gray/yellow combination used on anything...Navy or Army Air Force. Early on the army used a yellow wing/medium blue fuselage combination. The Navy was all yellow but sometimes yellow wings and silver fuselage. Later on the Army PT's were ALL SILVER as were some Navy. I don't understand someone spending the time and money to rebuild a beautiful airplane like a Stearman and put such a mishmash of incorrect decorative elements on it. For a moderate price I could advise anyone on how to apply their money in a restoration on almost any flying machine including a pterodactyl. Since they are almost as old as I am.

Very nice! One of my favorite airplanes but I like the Warner powered the best. Couldn't get a nicer flying airplane.

Not what an enemy pilot would want to see in his rear view mirror.

Here's a viewpoint you don't often see. This is a framegrab from a video camera I had mounted on the horizontal of my Pitts while flying in the Reno Air Races.

    That is a great photo.
Photo that I attach was sent to me about a month ago so do not know the photographer or copyright - will remove if requested.

Then why am I hearing the theme to Hawaii 5-0 when I look at that photo?

Oh, it's playing in the other room. Nevermind.
