Stopped by the USS Alabama museum in Mobile today on our way back from Florida. My son has developed a very young liking (obsession?!?) for airplanes, so we just wanted to make a quick drive through the parking lot and let him get out and look.

Anyhow, I remembered hearing that during Katrina a lot of the aircraft there got beat up pretty badly, but I had never seen any pictures. They had an F-9F and an F-86D that looked like they took a good beating. Thought I'd share the pics. Also took a few of the other stuff they have outside. I really like the looks of the MiG....very squat and sporty looking. And I LOVE the Albatross. That is my "I just hit the Powerball" airplane of choice!

As a Coast Guard helicopter flight mechanic, I have to say my favorite is that H-52 (a bit before my time, although I have worked with some old chiefs that flew on them!)

That photo of your Son grasping the fence *and* the concept of flight is wonderful.

    Do you remember if that's a MiG 15 or a MiG 17?

Looks like North Vietnamese insignia, which would lean more toward MiG 17.

Is one able to tour the Submarine in the background?

Not sure if that is a 15 or 17. We didn't have time to do the regular tour, just rode through the lot. I don't think MiG or the other planes I shot are on the official tour. I believe they are in line to be restored and placed in their indoor aircraft museum. Overall, you can tour the Alabama, the submarine, and the indoor aircraft museum. I know they had an SR-71 outdoors in the past, not sure if that is inside now. As for the Alabama and submarine, you can essentially crawl through every nook and cranny of those. Not too many off limits areas, and it essentially a self guided tour. Very worth going to see if you are in the area.

The museum web site says that "Red87" is a Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG 17 A Fresco.
