Since there seem to be several Boeing/ex-Boeing people on here, I thought I'd ask your opinions of Alan Mulally (current Ford CEO, former Boeing exec).

I know at Ford; he is 100% focused on making it through the current crisis; on top of improving the cars and brand. He's there from 6am til 8pm every working day.

I hear he drives people tough, but those who work directly for him like him. I don't see him leaving Ford any time soon.

I posted on Av-Chat my recollections of working with / for Mullaly on the 777 program, I think that it was last week or two. He IS a driver but he drives himself and he is DEMANDING. One doesn't take him lightly . He is a motivator par excellence and creative in his style and a competent engineer. Boeing was foolish to let him go and he has proven that at Ford.
In a previous post I mentioned his dropping by an early morning meeting in Bellevue, off company site, at 0700, and exhorted us all to not let Airbus-Europe beat us there in Renton where most of the PD work was being done. Then he " drops by" at a meeting in Everett at 1730 the same day and participated until it was concluded much later. We never knew when or where he was going to pop up.
Some people didn't like him because of his temper and unyielding ways but that goes with being a successful manager and motivator.
He ia an outstanding human being.

Although I was on industry-assist from Grumman when I was working on 777 design and was never a Boeing employee, Mulally was, effectively, still my boss. While I never met him personally I did attend several "all hands" meetings at which he presided, as well as seeing him in the PBS series "21st Century Jet". I was always impressed with his enthusiasm and his "gung ho" attitude; as hard as he worked it still seemed like he was having fun! (And "have fun" was one of the goals listed on the cards that all 777 employees received.)

Even though I was long gone from Seattle when he left and went to Ford, I was both surprised and disappointed for the Boeing folk. I was not surprised when Ford did not need a government bailout like their competitors and subsequently even turned a quarterly profit, almost unheard of in a recession environment! As others have said, Boeing blew it when they let him get away.

There is one very important difference between Alan Mulally and the current management at Boeing. He was a firm believer that PEOPLE were the most valuable commodity in the company. THAT is why people would work their asses off for him.

As I said before, he saw the writing on the wall. Before he went to Ford he had an opportunity to take the top slot. The path of the company was being dictated by bean counters at the time instead of AIRPLANE people (a 75 year tradition of Engineering based business models). I'm guessing they didn't feel he was going to fit into the "new' culture or HE decided to get out for the same reason.

The 787 is the result of the bean counter mentality, a world wide, world class company with a product revenue that is still mostly on paper and not with the customer.

NOTE: Ford is the ONLY US auto maker that did not take Government bailout.
