What alarm system do you guys recommend, there really isn't a good place for the food and water bowl to keep a mean dog in the car. Does an 85 have electric locks that can be accessed with the alarm? Doug Crall
My 84 308 came with an aftermarket alarm, brand was something like "Ungo". I never liked it, but it had a remote to lock the doors, and turn the alarm on. It is WAY to sensitive, was always going off. So, I am slowly but surely dismanteling it. It is basically a parasite, tangled into all the wiring. So to answer your question, yes, you can access the electric locks with an alarm. Here is another question: Are people still putting aftermarket alarms on their 3X8s, Mondials, etc??? Lets face it, most people IGNORE car alarms. They could just be play things for people to keep messing with your car... "lets see if we can set it off again". Also, they may $crew with your ignition (if set up that way), and you may be stuck for up to 30 minutes waiting for it to reset. I use "the club". It is easily visible, no nonsense, and does not go whistling off in the parking deck all day long. Get a club. The alarm will NOT stop someone from stealing the car. They can just drag it onto a flat bed.
I'm very pleased with my new Clifford with anti-reach-in motion sensor, remote trunk releases (front and rear trunk). I passed on the auto-door locking (for a Cabrio it's seemed to much trouble for the little convenience).
The guy that looks after my 328 in the UK told me he'd rather not fit a full alarm to the car. Said he's heard of too many with subsequent electrical gremlins. 20 year old wiring - that wasnt too good when new... I've gont for a fairly simple immobaliser - just disturbs the wires out of the ignition barrel - works fine and gives me enough deterent and peace of mind (on both security and reliability)
So you want to install Power Door Locks -- Here's the Procedure (308) http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/256120/281567.html Power Locks http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/256120/202412.html Power Door Locks http://70.85.40.84/~ferrari/discus/messages/256120/18728.html 328 door lock issue... http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17381 328 Door Lock Actuators? http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=17054 Link to the Keyless Entry system I use http://www.crutchfield.com/S-bAq7Er50LYU/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?i=514REC11 I've had new actuators and a Crimeguard REC-11+ in my for one year in my 328 and it's awesome. The keyless entry is wildly convenient and this system has a built in "starter kill," so the car can't be started without unlocking with the transmitters.
I won't install an aftermarket alarm in my 328, for the reasons mentioned here - messing with 20-year old Italian wiring, questionable usefulness, etc. The Club is probably fine, and I'm considering a shift gate lock (like the one from Hill). Honestly, though, I usually just park in safe places with the windows down so people don't finger/nose-mark the glass while looking at the car. Of course if it was a daily driver I'd probably at least do a kill switch.
There is absolutely nothing about 328 wiring that would lead to any sort of unreliability. Seriously, where are you getting this? Take it from me. I've been deep inside both the 308 and 328 wiring systems, having hardwired two Valentine 1 radar detectors, installed power door locks and keyless entry in both 308/328, EGT gauges in the 308, voltmeter in the 308 and 328, stereo systems in each, headlight upgrades in each. The wires are thick, well insulated, connected firmly, color coded, tied up reasonably nicely, etc. 308s have electrical issues stemming from their fusebox design, period. That design was changed in the 328. The fusebox in the 308 can be upgraded in any number of ways. I've never had an electrical issue in the 328--you don't really hear about them, do you? Installing an alarm system in a 3x8 is going to be a custom job. There are no pre-fabbed harnesses and you or the installer will have to get familiar with the (accurate, in my experience) wiring diagram available for both cars. Seriously. If somebody cares enough about your 3x8 that they're going to flatbed it, then there's really nothing you can do, can you? They're either going to try to joyride in it (can't - car won't start due to the ignition being interrupted by the alarm unit) or sell it for parts (yeah right!). Then again, I don't live in high-theft areas...
I was thinking a basic alarm, door, hood and trunk switches, and a loud alarm. I understand the 308 has some sort of electric door locks, I would like to connect to that for keyless entry, why, I am not sure, I haven't had the top on since I bought the car. Doug Crall
I had a simple Viper system put into my 308, door locks and alarm with adjustable proximity sensor. So far so good (4 years now)
