The following is an actual excerpt from this month's Forbe's Magazine:

A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole is maintained or even improved by the regular culling of the weakest members.

In much the same way, the human brain can operate only as fast as the slowest brain cells through which the electrical signals pass. Recent epidemiological studies have shown that while excessive intake of alcohol kills off brain cells, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first.

Thus, regular consumption of beer, wine etc., helps eliminate the weaker cells, constantly making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. The result of this in-depth study verifies and validates the causal link between all-weekend parties and job related performance. It also explains why, after a few short years of leaving a university and getting married, most professionals cannot keep up with the performance of the new graduates. Only those few that stick to the strict regimen of voracious alcoholic consumption can maintain the intellectual levels that they achieve during their college years.

So, this is a call to arms. As our country is losing its technological edge, we cannot shudder in our homes. Get back into the bars. Quaff that pint. Your company and country need you to be at your peak, and you shouldn't deny yourself the career that you could have. Take life by the bottle and be all that you can be. Forward this to all of your friends, acquaintances and co-workers that may be in danger of losing their edge.

Wow, that's interesting; it does stress a good point. I've never thought of it like that.

I have been trying to get this same point across to the world for about 35 years now.
I am still 'razor sharp' when sober, but that is becoming an increasingly less dominant part of the 24-hour cycle.
Alas, that appears to be the major drawback to this sort of 'long-term' experimentation.:)

Can anyone verify this as a legitimate scientific theory....If it's true that it attacks the weakest, I could see the possibilities...

    Nevertheless, interesting.

As with heart disease, moderate alcohol consumption may be good; while excessive drinking/abuse can cause mental decline. Apparently drinking during teen years, versus later, is still bad because it affects neurological development.

"Those who simply read the headlines, such as “Frequent Alcohol Drinking in Middle Age Harms the Brain” and “Drinking Alcohol in Your 40’s Increases Risk of Mild Cognitive Impairment, ” would be mislead. They wouldn’t realize that the study actually confirms that moderate drinking is better for the brain than either abstaining or drinking heavily for most people. That’s the finding of most of the research on the subject."

I seem to remember an article with almost identical wording appearing in a newspaper when I was in college. I would guess that it was around 1995, but I could be off by a year or two. My recollection was that the article was published (and it may have be a republished or syndicated article) in the Daily Princetonian or The Nassau Weekly. The article may well have been a reprint . . . If that Forbes article is new it must be the same author. I'll google for it in a few minutes.
As for the underlying biochemisty of moderate alcohol consumption being good for the brain, there is mounting evidence that this is true.

Must have been a quotation, not a reprint, if you believe these guys:

Thats the theory I tell people when they tell me I've had too much to drink. I tell them I'm preparing my brain for a hard week of classes.

it seems to me that there is as limit to the good effects. When i was underage, the old guys i got to buy for me were those guys that just plain had too much. Good for me and my buddies.
I know sometimes after drinking the nite after I do feel more focused. I think it just gets rid of some stress.
