I'm thinking about buying this car. It is supposed to be in restored top conditon. I haven't had the opportunity to look at the car yet. Does anyone here have some experiences to share? I have owned 11 Alfas 3 Maseratis and a 328 som I'm quite familiar with the quirks of italian cars. But none of the Alfas was this old. Anything in particular to look out for? The later 1600 Alfa with bosch ignition is a very nice package, these little cars are built like trucks, a bit heavy though. I owned two and always loved driving them. This one has some odd looking front side running lights The trunk and hood hinges are a weak point, the fuel system needs to be kept clean, multiple filters if possible. Torque the heads on every oil change. Second gear syncro's are a bit weak. The three shoe brake system (if it has them) are difficult to adjust. The steering wheel is normally black. The seats frames crack a lot. They are nice cars to own. Easy to maintain.
All good info. I'll look into it on saturday when visiting the dealer. So far I have noticed that the steering wheel is incorrect as well as the turning signal. Could it possibly be original with red piping on the chairs? My initial thought would be no, but since looking att googlepictures, there are many cars with piping. Could it be original? Additionally dashes aren't originally 'padded', floors were rubber, carpets on the sides and drivetrain tunnel only...as velocetwo mentioned torque heads...they heat up and warp like crazy, prone to blow gaskets. I once owned a '65 and loved it, drove it a lot! Same colors as that one there. I've always had a crush on Alfa Spider's of all vintages! Bravo on your choice! Pretty sure seats were originally vinyl? Completely understand leather though, looks, smells, feels so much better.
Are you sure about the padded dash? If you google the model, all pictures showing different cars have the same padding on the top of the dash.
the 1600 giulia spider definitely had a black pebbled dash cover with foam underneath. it was most likely vacuum formed. it rolled over the dash edge. dan
just took a look at picture, dash cover seems fairly correct, the rear view mirror is not correct however.
Thank you for valuable input. The car is now mine! Just got back from the dealer. I traded my Ferrari 328 Gtb. This is not a veloce. Standard one carb model. Engine and transmission are original. The best part about the whole car and important to me is the condition of the body. Absolutely straight and no rust whatsoever. Underneath it was completely dry and colored red. Very nice. Good paint, good interior. All mechanichs seems in good working order. The negatives are just cosmetic. The few non correct items mentionend before and the chrome was not perfect on the front and rear bumpers. This will be re-chromed next winter. The engine compartment was not so nice either, quite dirty and some oxidation. This will be detailed by the dealer prior to delivery. How many of these were built?
Nice Rear view mirror isn't correct Floor mats should be rubber otherwise a nice package with a few changes you would be all set. Trunk mats was rubber too as far as that side marker goes I think a lot of cars didn't have one, but if they did they were small and round. Maybe someone else can qualify this, but it looks like you have Veloce rims, those are nice! What brake system did you get two shoe or three shoe? Congrats!
