A simple question - are there ANY Alfa Romeo Montreals in the USA? I have always fancied owning this wonderful supercar, and while there seem to be plenty in Switzerland, I've never seen one for sale on US websites. Would it be legal to import one under the "exemption law" for classic/historical interest cars?

I've seen several in the SF Bay Area. As they are over 25 years old, you can import one with no trouble at all. In California, anything pre-75 is smog exempt so no modifications would be necessary, but I'm not sure if there are any other states where one would have trouble registering the car. I've always loved Bertone styling and wouldn't mind owning one of these at some point.

Everything in Illinois from 1995 doesnt need at test!! Since you are moving to Chicago that might be helpful. Atleast 3 Montreals will be at the
AROC Convention this year. You do see them for sale in the USA. I think you might also be able to bring a late model Alfa in to the country. You just cant sell it again here. I know of several post 1998 Alfa's in
the Illinois/Wisconsin area that the owner bought in Europe and keeps
    as his personal car.

They are around in the US.

There were two at the Desert Classic Concours at Palm Springs this past March. The white one was supposedly an ex-Paris show car. There was also an orange one. Both were highly original with about 30k miles. I think they had been imported from Italy as used cars at some point.

Tom, does that mean I can import a 16v Lancia Integrale? I've seen a Lancia Thema 8.32 here in Chicago and a 3200 bi turbo Maserati Coupe. Can you keep them indefinitely?

I was told you can import cars for yourself, but cannot resell them ever in this country. I think the Lancia Integrale in Chicago your talking about is yellow? There are also 2 Alfa 156's v6's and 1 Alfa 166 in the Chicago area. The 166 is light metalic blue.

One sold at the RM auction at Monterey last year for $30,250 according to their website.

I looked at it and sat in it but don't recall any specifics.

There are Montreals in the US, however, they were never officially sold here. See Alfabb.com for much more info.

I had a friend in Los Angeles who owned one for years in the 80's. It was not a garage queen either! He loved it.

Just to show you can get almost anything in the US if you try hard enough,
here is the Integrale 16V and Alfa 156 V6 2.5. The Lancia is in the Chicago area. The Alfa 156 is just north of Chicago in Wisconsin along with a light blue 166. The 156 photo was taken at Road America.

val herrera in the Texas section has an absolutely stunning Montreal that he brought to the Dallas Boardwalk show.
I like everything about the Montreal except the solid rear axle. What were they thinking ?

Jonny DeFatta of DeFatta Brothers Italian car shop in Baltimore MD had a Montreal.

As for Lancia Deltas in the states, there are more than a handful just in the rally community alone. One owned by Mark Everett has been the course opening car for Maine Forest ProRally. There were 2 rally prepared Integrales imported to stay a couple years back but one was lost recently in a shop fire. I saw one communting most every week in the DC area w/ diplomat tags years ago and then a more modern Lancia sedan w/ diplomat tags.

Hemming's Sports and Exotic had a nice write up on Montreal's approx 6 months ago, their buying guide feature that month. Good info. Seems to be a fair number around in California here.

A member on the Alfa BB has recently found two Montreal projects in different parts of the country. I have not had such luck. They are great cars with very handsome styling. I'll keep looking.
