SO COOL to stumble upon this thread!!! This was one of my first experiences in a sports car. My uncle had a beautiful Alfa Romeo Montreal! Wish I could dig up the pictures somewhere... Gorgeous car. Really reminds me of my childhood...
A few more pics I found of the car that started this thread: Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Never seen one with Webers?? Always liked the car but not for the Gandini design, as I understood, it was one of the few cars in the world that offered a true detuned F1 engine. I have seen 15-20 of these and they all had FI.
I believe the Montreal comes with the notoriously problematic SPICA FI system. Weber DDs maybe a modification. Motor is not a detuned F1 unit but rather 2 X 1300cc Giulia DOHC4 units 'married' at the crank to form a V8 with a total capacity of 2600cc. Horsepower is about 200bhp and top whack at +/- 140mph.
Indeed, although there's nothing problematic about SPICA in the right hands. ...Not a detuned Tipo 33 engine?
Its a detuned T33 motor with a different bore and stroke. They really only used these units in sportscar racing. The only F1 teams tha used the T33 V8 were March and Mclaren as test engines. They did not do very well. The Tasman series also had a few 2 liter Alfa V8's. The T33 V8 was an all new design with new block and heads. It was not 2 Giulia 1300 blocks put together. They even made a 4.0 version of the V8 motor for racing in 1971. TT/SD
By the way,Alfa started using a new head and block design in late 1970 for the T33 and F1 applications. This is the engine unit that won at Targa Florio,BrandsHatch and Watkins Glen in 1971.They also had a new lightweight gearbox after Sebring in 1971.Rumor is that Alfa built a new V8 motor based on the Cosworth V8 they were able to aquire and take apart in 1969.The new gearbox gearsets were not unlike a hewland gearset. GTV6's MUST have a proper topic.... a fantastic car. One of the best sounding engines ever this side of an Maserati Ghibli V8. Best regards, Alvaro.
Good idea...I will start one with my number 2 Alfetta GTV6. Hope you guys post photos on the thread. TT/SD
I have had one. It is a very strange car. To sum it all up: One: The brakes are very scary. Second: The slits on the side are very eager to collect rain, and the holes to let the water out on the bottom are very eager to get stuck, which leads to point five in my list. Third: everything (EVERYTHING) that is in the car is reflected in the windscreen, on the spot where the driver wants to look outside Fourth: the dials are unreadable when it is dark Fifth: It rusts so much that you can almost hear it if you listen well Sixth: it is very tail friendly, and will do things you dont expect it to do Seventh: Some people seem to be very tempted to fiddle with the Spica system, which you'd better not do. Leave it alone as long as it works well, the system on itself is very reliable, but there is almost no-one that can fix it when it has been fiddled with. But oh my God what a lovely car it is!!!!!!!!!!!!! As you can see I had a love-hate relationship with the car. When everything works fine, it is a true supercar.

There are 2 Montreals for sale here in NYC at Gullwingmotorcars in Long Island City if anyone is interested. I saw them when I went to look at a Bora. I cannot comment on their operation as I never did any business with them.
Nice! My friend has another orange one here in Montreal! Philippe www.lamborghinimiura.com Image Unavailable, Please Login

Proof (along with their 1750 motor, the GTV, and a few other examples) that when Alfa got it right, it was spectacular
