Recently took my car into the local dealer for an alignment. After inspection, the tech brings me back to show me the ball joints are worn and tells me he doesn't want to do an alignment b/c it wouldn't do any good. Instead, he wants to replace the part which he said only comes as a unit from the factory. The service guy then hands me the quote to perform this replacement. I laughed. See pic.

Is there an easier (and more cost effective) solution? Basically, the symptom is that the car slightly veers to the right and then back to the left. It’s not entirely noticeable nor extreme. I found it after driving on the highway for a little bit.

Better yet. get the suspension inspected by a different and highly respected shop. I am seeing a lot more 360/430 suspension repairs being done than I believe need to be done. The more we hear of particular issues being addressed the more aggressively they get sold. Its an old and very common pattern and the internet feeds it.

@Rifledriver is 100% correct that the internet absolutely feeds a confirmation bias when it comes to these cars and the stuff that people order.

Whether your car needs all that stuff or not, I cannot possible advise.

I will point out however, that ball joints on a 360 or F430 do not require replacement of a full control arm. The ball joints / dust boots (LBJ-360K and UBJ-360K), and compensator rings (179555 and 179554) are all available as individual spare parts -- in addition to all the other stuff like tie rod ends, etc.

Just curious, how many miles are on your car?

Also, could you lift the front end and see if you have any play in the front suspension?

Crazy they want to replace the control arms themselves. If your flamblocs are so worn that they deflect under load then yes the alignment would not hold.

Thanks guys. To answer your question, there are about 20k miles on the car. There was some play in there b/c I watched him stick a screwdriver or something in there and move it up and down while on the lift

Jeez, is that price in Japanese yen? any suspension/ steering parts for these cars are all pretty cheap and easy to change, I'd get a second opinion.

FWIW, I recently had the front upper and lower ball joints, both sides, replaced on my 360 at an independent and respected mechanic. An alignment was performed afterwards as required. Total cost, parts and labor, for all of that was $3021. I'm in the state of NH, if that matters. I'm sure you'll find a better deal elsewhere!

He went to the dealer. Dealers are required by their contract to buy their parts from Ferrari. Ferrari does not sell ball joints. They only sell complete control arms.
