Need a couple of spare engines, too, since time between overhauls was pretty short. Pretty reliable and grass field qualified.

The good news is it's a “Uchebnyy Modernizovannyy,” which translates from Russian as “Training Modernized," a training model that can accommodate an instructor in the rear seat, with the student pilot up front in a regular MiG-21 cockpit.

Looks about as much fun to land from the rear seat as an F-4G. Eventually they banned F-4G back seat landings because the view was so poor with all the EW gear.

My hangar neighbor has at least one of these. I can't remember if his is a two seat or not, I will have to take a look next time. Sadly, he just removed the F-104 which was next to it for the last ten or so years.

I'm surprised some enterprising sole here in the US has not retrofitted engines with more longevity. I understand it involves much more than just the engine (e.g. the intake ducting), but still .... Maybe someone has and it ended in a quagmire.
