the Bonhams daytona was fresh restoration, in a color combination I love. It suffered from being inside which made it look black. It is a no-stories car ready to drive. It belongs to an acquaintance who will now drive the piss out of it like he should, I look forward to seeing it on the road. It was "priced" higher because it is better than the others I saw. The grey car at Gooding had some rust issues but was a steal, it looked solid.

    Hello Tim,

thank you for the update. I followed the Gooding auction for some time and according to me they squeezed some cars to the top.....endless waiting for another 5k. Some cars were very good (the 550 B was new), and some cars soso (I wasn't there but from description). I think the best cars still sell well, the middle ones dropped quite a bit. I also saw some higher end cars at the lesser auction houses and I really don't understand why owners want to try this. It never works.....

    ciao

Charlie Ross at Gooding really works to get the best result possible, sometimes that takes awhile but ultimately he delivers for the consignor. High end cars that are offered by second and third tier auction companies are often lots that have been passed by the major houses. Some of the weakness in the 2018 market can be attributed to changes in the US tax law which eliminated Like Kind exchanges. There was a flurry of activity to complete transactions before December 31.

Yes, very interesting to know if the change of tax law that allowed to roll over investments without paying capital gain tax in case of reinvestment ( from now on, only allowed for real estate investments,,,) will impact the US market as any sale will become potentially taxable.

Glad to hear/read there's still more real car connoisseurs willing to use theirs "as intended".
It's sad how many great cars end up in cocoons or portfolios after acquisitions or restorations.

I think this is real. Makes people think twice before swapping classic cars. You have to really want the cash, or the next car if you have substantial gains.

I agree. This will affect those who have large appreciation in the car. If you bought recently and have a fairly high basis (basically what you paid), and you sell close to that, then you could get into the next one without too much tax.

I have a feeling there will be some revisions to the tax code over the next 2-4 years. But for now, no more like kind exchanges for cars.
