i know i'll probably get flamed for this so i'll zip up the suit now. to me the allure of the Porsche isn't there and i think it has to do with the fact that over here in orange county they are as common as hondas. I can't go 10secs with out seeing one. the other day on a walk through my nieghborhood i saw 3 one after the other 996tt drive right by me all within a few minutes of each other. come to a stop at anylight and you're gaurenteed to see 2 or more every time.

are they a hoot to drive? sure i've driven a few and they are fun but for the money there are alot more contenders and head turners than the p-car. reminds me of the insurgance of BMW when it became the yuppie car suddenly my old Alpina B7s wasn't so unique, just old to the new crowd. am i alone on this??

Exactly, and in Sweden and other Scandanavian countries, gorgeous blondes are a dime a dozen. Wouldn't want one of those, either. VRRRROMM!

i have owned and driven many p cars the past 15 years, i would have to agree with you.... they certainly dont turn heads with their current styling and the performance is good but many cars can match or excede the p car perfroance these days...even the new 997 hasnt really increased the performance much

umm okay, i'll state it differently. porsche like BMW has lost it's key focus thier target audiance is no longer the true enthusiast but an owner looking for a badge. this ofcourse being my opnion. i consider myself an auto enthusiast as i have owened many true sports cars and sport sedans. 80' M535, alpina's, 69' SCJ torino, M3's and alfas.

i looked into getting a porsche but to me the car doesn't live up to the hype. call me an owner if you will but i'm very picky when it comes to my cars, i don't follow the herd.

i think that you may be correct in saying that porsche has lost sight of its' core group however i fear this can be said of many great manufacturers.

porsche w/ the suv...whatever happened to "we build sportscars"?? of well.

ferrari and the mass production of the 360. anyone w/ a few coins to rub together can have one.

bmw...ah i still remember my 2002 tii and my csl. those days are long gone.

my advice...buy the cars of older vintage. they are the best value proposition and in the case of my 930 or 512 bbi, they can still boil your blood!!!

It's not what you drive, man. It's your state of mind that I was referencing- the sort of mentality that takes the time to stop and think "Gee, Porsches are so yesterday."
Porsche has alienated a certain % of its core customer base by building the cayanne and other "mundane" models; however, that doesn't have any impact on the "allure" - if the current Porsche don't twist your braids, then go for an older car. Your outright discrimination generalizes the entire marque.
Porsche may have "sold out," but at least they're still good to look at - unlike the Bangelized beemers.
My point was: your commment implied that Porsches (past & present) have lost their allure because their bought up in drovers -that's ridiculous; if you don't care for the 996TT, go out and get a 930T. The brand isn't dead, nor is its mystique and racing heritage - if you're looking to blame someone for the watering down of the market, blame all the Joneses' that buy land barge SUVS; the very people that put a stanglehold on the sportscar market to begin with.

you're right the joneses' have messed it up, however i rarley ever see the older model porsches those are few and far between. my view is based purley on the current trends. i do understand this viewpoint offends owners of p-cars past & present but i'm not creating the problem just mearling observing and reporting. BMW went this way and it took some time for me to accept it but i moved onto other marques that fit my bill.

for racing heritage Jaguar, Porsche,BMW etc... have great histories and some of the consumer cars benifit from the technology. but do you think the majority of these owners buy the cars for thier racing heritage? today it's all about status and show. the true enthusiast are a very small group, and at the pace CA is moving i'll be regulated to driving some electric bubble.

And every Ferrari in the world is the fastest? Best looking?
Not everyone looks for top speed or flat out acceleration. People buy cars for different reasons. To slander an entire company that has a rich racing past is a little nutty.

I have a 996 and it is a hoot to drive (every day). Much more reliable than my 355, but with much less soul (I didn't like the look of the 996 at first and have had to let it grow on me). However, it has a wonderfully balanced nature and can be driven very, very fast on all kinds of roads in all kinds of conditions and can still haul around me, my wife, and my two kids in the back seat. And with the GT-3 Aero Kit it is unusual, but then I don't live in Orange County where every high school kid drives a $40K car. Overall, it's a great car and shouldn't be discounted by those who want to be "unusual". Just like the Swedish blonde comment above... just 'cuz everyone's got one doesn't mean it ain't fun to drive.

I will say, however, that my old 1985 Turbo-look cabriolet (shown here) was more of an eye-catcher in its day and still has an allure that is tough to match. Buy one of these (under $25K) and you'll be happy and unusual (only about 500 of them came to the U.S for the entire 1985-1989 production run).

More silly crap. So you live in a nice neighborhood where people know the value of a buck and your complaining? The lack of reality by some on this thread and board is why i seldom visit here anymore. Wake up. Dollar for dollar porsche is pretty tough to beat. Might you turn your head for a carrera GT? The pepper wagon while not my favorite has a phenomenal powerplant, with what 475 real hp, remind me what the beautiful 360 produces.
    Stop reinforcing each other's rose colored view of reality. Porsche has a longer heritage than ferrari and equally as impressive in motorsports and construction. You do not need to tear something else down in order to feel good about your own situation unless you are not happy with it. Of Ferrari's 4 current models only 1 will stand the test of time. even still;

A little more reality and a little less back slapping would help here.

i'm not sure if they know the value of a buck or not, my point is that due to the sheer amount of p-cars running around the roads here a true enthusiast is often mistaken for the herd of badge wearing sheeple. lets face it manufactures know where the money is and will go after it, the small group of enthusiast is hardly enough to keep any manufacture alive. i don't own a ferrari and probably never will only becouse i drive the piss outa cars and it would be cost prohibitive for me. i'm not trying to make myself feel good about a car i don't need cars to do that.

So do you think Ferrari's target audience is "the true enthusiast"? You're far more likely to see a Ferrari parked in front of a swank restaurant than on a spirited drive on the back roads.

It may be just a matter of perspective. Southern CA is probably the unique in the world with respect to the sheer number and percentage of people that drive really nice cars. Almost anywhere else and a 996TT would draw a crowd, or at least garner a many admiring glances. It would probably be impossible to own a car in LA that nobody else has, or be the only one on your block with the new "hot" car for very long. Wait six months and the Lotus Elise, AM DB9, and Bently Conti GT will be crowding the parking lots at Starbucks.

Like others have said, maybe an older car like a '89 Speedster or 930 would garner more attention if that is what you are looking for. I don't remember the quote from Gone In Sixty Seconds, but Nicholas Cage was discussing a 360 versus an old 275GTB (?). The basic gist of the quote was that in the 360 he was just one of the crowd, in the 275 he was a connesour.

you are absolutely correct. In CA, we are very spoiled. I refer to the 911s as cars "waiters and waitresses and poor people" drive. Yes I say it jokingly, before you guys jump down my throat. ;)

They are dime a dozen. I know that doesn't make it a bad car, but just my observation of the sheer number of cars. People in LA are truly saturated with cars, that they don't turn heads anymore. I mean I know people who have 1 360, 1 CS, and one Bentley. Those are the weekend toys, and the daily driver is a GT2. How sick is that? We think its normal. Then again, I live in a place where condos go for 580-660K on a normal basis. Heck on my morning commute over the past few weeks, I have seen 6-7 ferraris, 1 Carrera GT, one Ford Gt, 3-4 Bentleys, and 2 new rolls and 1 orange murcielago. CA is crazy.

I agree 996 draws crowd plenty of places, but not in LA.

Drawing crowds or not, most people who don't like porsches have never driven one. They are an absolute blast to drive around a track. Even a C4 which probably the least fun in the dry.

to expand upon that here in OC millon dollar tract homes are the norm. seeing a maybach roll down PCH is common. look i'm not bashing the p-car but if 80% of your town drove f-cars what would you think?

Maybe Porsche as a brand has lost some of it's luster.

The cars are still wonderful and if you want "exclusive" and "rare", well that's why god gave coachbuilding skills to the British and the Italians.

I've never really thought of it this way, but OC may be in proportion with its home/car value ratio with the rest of the country.

    OC House/996TT = $1,000,000/$100,000 = 10:1 ratio

    Midwest House/Camry = $250,000/$25,000 = 10:1 ratio

By my calculations even those living in a falling-down single-wide ($200,000 in CA?) should be driving a well-worn NSX.
