Almost done changing my belts then....

    I was just about to finish changing out my belts and get on the road to reassembley and what do I do. I drop a brand new, just out of the box tensioner bearing. Of course it shattered into a million little pieces which I found all of. So the question is should I clean and rebuild the bearing or just put in another one. I've already ordered one but has anyone out there put one back together and used it? I'm sure i'm not the first to drop or destroy a new one. :)

    I'm no expert but if it were me I'd put the new one you jsut ordered.

    Wow didn't know Tony built them so poorly, was it from Ferrari or ???. I can't answer your question about reassembly but I'd definetly replace it.

    Its not built poorly. Its built with two inner races that slide together between the seals and the ball bearings roll between them.

    Myself, by having it come apart and banging around after dropping it, I would fear something may have gotten inside it. Sad to say but unless you could totally take it apart and put it together clean, I would replace it.

    If you dropped a torque wrench you're supposed to have it recalibrated. Some don't but I would. With that in mind I wouldn't think twice about replacing the bearing. But then it's a tough call considering the price. I wonder how many are dropped during packaging etc.

    Naw... I'd replace it ;)

    Don't take chances get NEW one. For the price of a new one you will have Thousands of dollars worth of PEACE OF MIND.

    IMHO, if you dropped it hard enough to crack it open and have the parts come flying out, I'd be concerned that it is now out of round. It might not be visible to the naked eye, but do you want to find out for sure at 7000 rpm? I agree with the concensus... replace it.

    Which cost less, a new bearing, or the tow and engine overhaul when the belt comes loose and you drop valves?

    The reason you changed the belts and bearings was for reliabulity. A new or replacement bearing sounds like at least cheap peace of mind.

    I'm definetly putting in the new one I was just wondering if anyone has ever done it. If it is something common I'd give them a free bearing. I cleaned everything out in my parts cleaner and between the balls, races, and the case there is no visible damage. It dropped on a forgiving surface.

    as an FYI;
    ball bearings are made of M-50 tool steel. you will not be able to damage them by dropping them. if you want to experament with risk of loosing an eye, hit one as hard as you can with a steel hammer. the hammer will shatter before you dent the ball.

    the design of the bearing is one outer race and two inner for disassymbly. clean and re-assymble. the life of a ball bearing is measured in millions of revolutions and can easily be cacluated. the wear is the race, long before the ball. inspect for physical damage if it really bothers one, otherwise it should be just fine.




    as a kid i used to make home made cannons out of used tool steel bearings from my dad. 1/2"dia spheres that would go through anything!
