So can you any of you die hard ALMS fans explain something to me? Is P2 supposed to directly compete against P1? If so, why not just merge them both into P1? Also, what about the GT1 corvettes? They seem to have a class of their own, are they competing against GT2? Seems to me it would make much more sense to have only two classes.
The numbers for GT 1 are not there this year, again but it looks and sounds like next year there will be more cars in that class. P1 is suppose to be the top of the ladder of series. This year, the P2 Porsches have had there number. Again, the word is that next year there will be more in P1 that will give the P2 a run for theire money and that they will have to settle for winning their own class. ALMS does not do like the other sportscar series does. ALMS let's the teams run. If your equipment does not break and you end up at one over all, even if you are a GT2 car (GT2 has been in the top three during the 24 hrs of Daytona in the past) you are not given smaller gas tanks to slow you down.
Doing tape delay. Great TV coverage. ALMS is growing with some class conflicts. The growth tells me it will fix it's self.
What a great race to watch! The battle at the end between Dumas in the Porsche (with spyker logos?) and Pirro in the Audi was great. The Audi seemed to be so much faster in the straights it looked like the Ducati in MotoGP. Congrats to Risi, Melo and Salo for the GT2 win another great battle. I already have my tickets for their visit to Laguna Seca.
Protect grandstands from sneakers, but why not open up the track to all ticket holders? Why Penske? why!?!?! Where are the motorhomes full of Tailgators? Nice shots Isaac! Guess the street cicuit does not lend itself to people walking around. The paddock is open to the public at Laguna Seca for ALMS
Just got back from Detroit and we were pleasantly surprised about the event and Detroit. Race is already on sked for 30 August 2008 and we'll definitely go again. Due to a mechanical problem with the 6 am NWA flight to Detroit yesterday the folks were helpful in getting us two seats on AA which got us in earlier than their next flight and no guarantee on what time our originally scheduled flight would leave. Got to Comerica in about half an hour then took the shuttle. I am not a fan of street courses but this seemed to have ambiance more like Montreal F1. Couldn't get to the really only fastest straight - no access for spectators but if you were in a boat you have a great view. Didn't bother with grandstand tickets - the Corvette area had three big screen tv's, plus others . . .scanners and you are all set. Found a good viewing site at a couple of the turns. Wish they'd give access to the straight along the river next year. Workers/volunteers were very helpful and friendly. Weather couldn't have been better. Watched PWL cause #61 to hit the wall but fortunately only minor damage on the right front and fortunately didn't cause any more damage. Downside on this track is no access to behind the pits due to the main grandstand (Road Atlanta is number one for being right at the pits) This is one of the easiest races that we've attended this year. Our GPS took us right to Conmerica for parking ($5) and the shuttle; you got a wristband for the shuttle. Tent was set up at paddock entrance to exchange ticket for wristband. We stayed at the Westin located directly in the McNamara terminal. Very reasonably priced room; great late evening dinner in the bar; Northwest check-in stations in the lobby and best of all is we only take our backpacks so with having no luggage to check there's a "private" hotel TSA entrance and walk up and walk out to the gates. Allan came over after he got off the podium for P1 and a couple kisses and three podium hats I definitely was a happy camper. He lead the race and I really think Audi would have won overall if it wasn't for the safety car. He had a 14 second lead at one point over one of the Penske spyders. Next "stop" is Road Atlanta then Laguna Seca - hard to believe season is coming to an end. The "official" 2008 sked will be made known at Petit. Point system is slightly different at Petit due to the length of the race but Guiseppe told us they only need 10 to take GT2. GO RISI !! Carol
Belle Isle is one of the best places to watch a race - bar none. The facilities were world class. Penske should run for President. Or at least be named CEO of General Motors. ; ) George
I paid $40 for grandstand #3 which is just around the first turn. Good place for passing and for Porsches's bouncing off cushioning. One nice thing about ALMS is with the races being 2 3/4 hours long, there is time to roam. About half way through I went to all of the grandstands. By that time the people checking tickets just saw I had a ticket that wasn't general admission and didn't check any closer. From grandstand #1 you look right into the pits. A real difference between ALMS and F1 is cars can play bumper cars and not retire.
Sorry but Belle Isle is not a world class facility, nor is it one of the best places to watch a race. The track at Belle Isle is very bumpy; many transition areas from alsphalt to concrete, narrow, no run-off areas, from turn 7 into turn 8 was inaccesible to the public - longest straight on track. Access to the pits at the other ALMS races doesn't involve having to pay for a main grandstand seat. The best pit access of all the venues we've attended is by far Road Atlanta - you can walk right up and watch the team's computer screens. Spectator Hill at Road Atlanta provides ones of the best viewing areas going; the grandstand across the track from the pits at Laguna Seca gives you a great view of most of the track; Miller Motorsports Park in Salt Lake City has an area for GA that's right at pit out, great first turn and most of the track is viewable from this spot; the hill at Lime Rock provides a view of most of the course; Road America has many great viewing locations - Audi hospitality was set up on turn 5 as they came out of the turn heading up the hill; Sebring has Turn 10 that's great for spectators (not only for the cars but also a terrific place to see the bizarre set-ups spectators construct) - another location where you are only separated by a chain-link type fence from the pits. The only time we pay for a grandstand seat for an endurance race is for Le Mans. The majority of ALMS races are 2 hr 45 minutes with the exception of Long Beach which is slightly over an hour; longer ones are Sebring; Petit Le Mans (Road Atlanta); Road America, Laguna Seca. Carol
One GT class makes sense, but not one LMP class. Porsche and Acura (HPD with French chassis from Courage) are spending big $$$$ on P2 this year. They also weigh 150 KILOS less than the R10s.
Carol, no doubt you hear this an innumerable amount of times, but you have an amazing amount of info which would be of incredible assistance for any race attendee and you're 100% accurate based on the few races I've been fortunate enough to attend. Is there a published jknight raceguide out ? Best regards, Isabelle
Isabelle thanks for the very nice comment, it's greatly appreciated. I just try to pass along info that may be of assistance to others. We've had the opportunity to attend numerous different race series and Ferrari owner events this year in various locations in the US and Europe and to be able to share suggestions with/for others is great. Bruce - thanks for your comment in a prior post. Carol
