    Alonso: `McLaren needs more speed`
    Monday 27th August 2007

Fantasy F1 - Win a trip to Monaco!
It's not too late, point scoring starts at the Bahrain GP. Click here.

Fernando Alonso has urged McLaren to find the extra speed needed to keep Ferrari at bay in the Championships.

Ferrari claimed the 1-2 at Istanbul with Felipe Massa leading home his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen, while third place was the best Alonso could have hoped for.

However, the Spaniard didn't only finish behind the Ferraris on the track. He was also behind them in pace. While Raikkonen's fastest lap during the 58-lap grand prix was a 1:27.295, Alonso's best was 0.775s slower.

The McLaren driver, though, wasn't too fazed by the blistering pace shown by Raikkonen.

"Well, we more or less knew that, because we are coming from some races where we saw their potential: in Magny-Cours they were very very quick, in Silverstone they were very quick again," Alonso said.

"The only race where we were back on the pace was maybe Hungary and that was not a surprise because it's a very slow circuit and something like Monaco.

"We know that that type of circuit is quite good for us, but coming to a normal circuit like Turkey, they are on top again. We know that we need to improve but next race will be better."

With five races to go McLaren have an 11-point lead over Ferrari in the Constructors' Championship, while Lewis Hamilton is five points ahead of Alonso in the Drivers' standings.

    End of Planet F-1 article.

Alonshole: McLiaren needs more speed. Duh. Really now that is an astonishing statement. ;)

Seems like last year. Ferrari started to make a late-season push against Renault, bit it didn't prove to be enough. Renault didn't get many wins in the second half of the year either.

Was Alonshole saying: It's not my fault I came in third today...the car's too slow???

Otherwise, it's just an obvious observation. Why say it unless to make an excuse for himself? Sounds like he is leaving McLiaren to me.

It would have been enough, if the Schum's engine didn't explode in Suzuka

    Nonsense:

Alonso won with 134 to MS' 121 points. Even twelve (10 + 2 from Alonso gaining 1st) points from Suzuka wouldn't have been enough.

Ferrari seemed to have the speed all weekend long.

Maybe he was speaking honestly? McLaren is not as fast as the Ferrari and the championship is still up in the air. I would be concerned if I were Alonso and Lewis.

Man I hope the Scuderia blister the McCheaters for the remainder of the season. I would just love it!

Looking forward to another Ferrari 1-2 @ Monza!

As was pointed out by SpeedTV ; a decision will have to be made by Ferrari, possibly after Monza, as to continue to give full comitment to this seasons car or to focus more on next year.
Mclaren will make a similar decision.
Focusing on this years WDC/WMC could affect competitiveness next year.
I think that Ferrari has a better package for the final races but is it enough to overtake McC ?
It will probably be decided on luck and Alonshole seems to be sacrificing more chickens than the rest.

And of course Alonshole wants MacDaddy to concentrate on this year; he may be gone the next. Making next years car less competitive.
    The boy aint no dummy.

Thats true, if all events are completely independent. Had MS won Suzuka he would have had 128 pts to Alonso's 124, thereby giving him the upper hand at Interlagos and allowing him to drive more defensively rather than having to go for it all. Not to mention the fact that he might well have beaten Alonso from 10th on the grid were it not for the Fisichella incident.

I know, I know, woulda coulda shoulda....I'm not saying he would have one i'm just saying that had he one in Japan the Interlagos race would have been a lot different.

I understand your point and it is a valid one. Just mathematics don't include the overall perspective. But: MS' race in Interlagos was so flawed it is hard to image that he would have gotten enough points. The possible scenarios are endless. In a way it is better that he lost the title by that much. Probably hurts less than say Prost who lost to Lauda by half a point.
