Alonso: If Renault win I may yet stay
    Tuesday 20th January 2009 - PlanetF1.com

Fernando Alonso has put the onus on Renault to keep him at the team, stating that if they win races and titles he may opt against a move to Ferrari.

According to rumours the Spaniard, who has a contract with Renault until 2010, is set to move to Ferrari the following season. Renault, though, are keen to hold onto the driver who carried them to back-to-back World titles in 2005 and 2006.

However, Alonso says if they want to do that they will have to prove they can provide him with a car capable of winning his third World title.

"I've been answering this question for many years," Alonso said. "Hopefully this year I can be more relaxed about this question.

"If we are winning races and fighting for the Championship then maybe we forget Ferrari.

"I am really concentrating on this 2009 season. I am more motivated than ever, more prepared than ever, physically and mentally.

"With all these changes I am really looking forward to sitting in the car on Wednesday and then starting in Australia.

"When we talk about 2010, 2011 or 2012, it is a difficult question to answer because I'm not looking that far away.

"Right now, I only have one target - winning the Championship. If we don't win it, then it will be a disappointing season.

"In race two or race three, if we are nowhere, then maybe we have to change our target.

"But now in January, you have to be really optimistic, and right now we are."

Ruthless as ever, his car is not a winner in the looks department, but that won't matter if it's a contender.

Besides the money i think it WOULD be a better intrest for him if he were to stay at Renault, because you know thats the team that he had his most sucessful seasons in Formula 1. It's the team that really made his name in the sport, when he was at Minardi he was nobody then he got his big chance and he took it which made him double world champion and the same team the won the consructors championship in the same seasons. Unless driving for Ferrari is one of dreams as it is for SO many drivers, i would rather pay back the loyalty especially since they took him back after leaving for Mclaren. That is asuming that Renault gets it right, but even if they don't this season, a team like Renault is going to get it right eventually, just depends on how long he is willing to wait.

I'm pretty sure he will be at least 3 time world champion before he retires. I know that some of you are going to say "Of course he will be when he moves to Ferrari" but truth is knowone knows. I'm not Alonso's biggest fan but i honestly think thats what he would be best doing, if the money doesn't get the better of him that it.

I really doing this it was a case of "taking Alonso back" at Renault. Compared to the driver lineup they were using I think they got a pretty good deal "taking him back".

I understand where he is coming from. Who doesn't like to win? He has a big apetite for it but at the same time I would expect him to be a bit more discrete about it rather then mentioning Ferrari in his interviews.

agreed if I were on the renault team i'd be pretty pissed off. everyone knows he wants to head to ferrari, but you don't have to publicly state it when you have a 2 year contract with your current team.

You would, but Alonso doesn't know what loyalty is.

Loyalty in F1? That doesn't win you a whole lot of titles. Once again, there is nothing wrong with what he said. If Renault produces a winner this year why would he want to leave regardless of who wants him? Alonso only left Renault because Ghosen wouldn't fully commit to the F1 program. By the time he did Alonso had already signed with McLaren.

+1 considering Ferrari denied quite quickly and at high levels all last year about his having a deal for Ferrari. Clearly the last round of rumors were just that or he wouldnt mention going to Ferrari. Fact is FA isnt going anywhere at all. Never had a deal and 2011 is way to far away and the sport is in flux to begin with.

Kimi was exactly discrete as you mention about his deal for Ferrari. Others talked but he didnt.

Yup and he should have won his third championship in 2007 if McLaren had not screwed up.
