Qualifying tells you which car and driver pairing is the fastest not the race.

There is too much strategy going on for the race times to mean much. For example at the British GP, Mark, LH had backed off because they had their positions secured and Alonso was trying to dig himself out of another hole.

If Mark had wanted to he could have beaten that time, but there was no need cause unfortunately you don't get WDC points for fastest race lap time like you used to. Note how after the safety car on the very next lap Mark set the fastest race lap time immediately (at that point) ... thus he had plenty in that car and was saying to LH, don't bother trying to catch me.

Also the cars get faster as the race progresses because the fuel weight is burnt off ...

one heck of an opinion when the red cars are well over half a second slower in single lap performance. one of the funniest posts i've read in some time. thanks for the comedy during a crappy spell for the Scuderia.

Listen, guys, we´ve not seen the Ferrari running a "normal" race for a long time. They only had a relatively normal race in Canada, and they were way faster than the Red Bull (yes, that was Red Bull´s worst race) and almost as fast as the McLaren. They´ve got a lot of improvements since then.

Faster than the Red Bull? In qualifying not at all, but in race trim they´re not too far, and with all the brain fades from the wunderkind and the "more-bollocks-than-brain-aussie", they could be tied or even slightly ahead in the championship.

But, the current points really adds some spice in here. Fred should play it cool and not make any unwanted moves on the track, and the title should be his.

Winning the title this way is sort of bitter sweet. FA knows he hasn't the quickest car on the track, and his title is the result of blunders by quicker drivers with quicker cars. If Red Bull wins it than they deserve it, if Ferrari wins it then Red Bull should be ashamed for their collective lack of sound decisions as this type of crap has been happening to them all season. Crashing out, engines, whatever. That or they have the worst luck ever.

Fingers crossed, but man those RBR cars are fast.

Regardless of who wins this has been the most exciting F1 season I've seen in the 10 years I've been watching!

Well, no. All serieus 2010 title contenders have had their fair share of bad luck and silly mistakes.

Alonso took his share at Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone and Spa. Webber of course at Valencia, Turkey and today. Hamilton at Monza and Singapore. Vettel in Turkey, Spa and today.

Any of the remaining contenders will make a very worthy 2010 champion. That's how great this season actually is.

Alonso has won three of the last four races. How does that mean he doesn't have the quickest car? Maybe not in qualifying, but the Ferrari has been mostly the equal of Red Bull since Hockenheim.

What a difference a week makes. Incredible how people are changing their tunes after one race. Forza Alonso! I think he's got it covered.....

I am not too sure. 11 points ahead of Webber, 50 points in the game. Still too close for comfort.

It's close for sure, but we know how Alonso is under pressure. Webber cracked today, Hammy is further back and so is Vettel. Of course, one bad race can turn it all around, but recent history is on Ferrari's side. Driver for driver I'd pick Alonso over Webber any day.

Luis, same here, would love Alonso to win it, but wouldn't be too hurt if it turns out to be Webbo either.

    Tony,

I wouldn't mind seeing Webber win it either but I think Alonso is simply better than him. Vettel would have a better shot had it not been for some bad luck today and mistakes in earlier races. Strange year we are having!

A win is indeed a win, but I see the win for Alonso as proof to other drivers that Alonso is a more cool-headed mature driver than him being the quickest on the track. Had Vettel shown half the driver maturity Alonso has he should have had this season hand over fist. Going to have to see I guess. I have to hand it to Alonso for really kissing the RB times. His race laps are an algorithm where you just never know if it's going to be much quicker or much slower.
