Former world champion Fernando Alonso says he is open about his future plans in Formula One after admitting he is undecided about where he will race next year.

Although Alonso has previously said he sees no reason to leave Renault, he hinted at the Canadian Grand Prix that he was now looking at all opportunities within the sport.

"Next year everybody will start from zero," said Alonso, who is believed to have a performance-related clause in his contract that allows him to leave Renault at the end of this year.

"Aerodynamically, etc., every team improves five or 10 percent every year. You miss one year, you are down for the rest of the year. Next year, [because of the new regulations] that's not the question.

"So there are always surprises when these things happen. Any team can be strong next year. It's a difficult decision from a driver's point of view."

Alonso said he would not rush into making a decision and suggested that he would favour joining an outfit that had the chance to do something special.

When asked what he will base his future decision on, Alonso said: "Being calm and listening to everybody. At the end, trust one of them. Everybody is very optimistic now about next year, but it's the same every time. You need the inside feeling that someone is cleverer than the other ones."

Alonso has been surrounded by speculation that he has already signed a contract with Ferrari from 2010 - and the possibility of Kimi Raikkonen retiring at the end of 2009 would make the Spaniard an obvious target for the Maranello team. But Alonso says he is surprised by the Ferrari rumours.

"I was not talking to anyone there," he explained. "I've seen many things written everywhere. It's not a big problem. It's also strange to read about 2010; we are in 2008. I don't know what I will do next year, so imagine in two years' time! There's nothing. Just rumours."

Interesting how he says he doesn't know what he's gonna do next year. Sounds like he's fully prepared to use his ext clause if Renault continues to suck, and he has a better offer.

I really like this guy, I think being at McLaren is like working for the Devil. Alonso is an excellent driver, to be remembered in history. But I still do not want to see him drive in F1 in a Ferrari.

Not certain of the dynamics involved but I wouldn't mind seeing what he could do in a Bimmer. Nick has peaked imho and now that Massa has turned it around, there are no other seats left in front row center.

    Prediction:

Massa will win the 2008 WDC, pissing off the hierarchy when he suggests he should be paid like Kimi, and he should, but LDM is anal and will deny. Massa will quit then join and bring Toyota to the front of the grid by 2010 who will pay him beaucoup dollaros, winning his second WDC in 2011, and his third in 2012 in a Toyota while ending Ferrari dominance until 2013. Michael Schumacher will take over as Massa's manager in 2009 and will then infuse his magic on Toyota showing how them to assemble a team. Both will learn Japanese. Massa will retire in 2013 to take care of the 6 children he will have by then.

Who knows, but it sounds interesting. Even plausible.

Yeah just like Alonso winning at Monaco sounded plausible huh? Or DC getting a podium there last year? Yeah only plausible to you, mate.:)

Although, after thinking about Ted, I wouldn't mind seeing Massa take the title.
