Oh well, it makes watching F1 more fun when you are rooting for someone to LOSE as well as someone to WIN. Every great story has to have a hero and a villain.

 

+1, Andrew, it is funny that that link has Alonso doing the advertising for the TAG Heuer watches.

 

maybe he had a bad weekend? erm, yeah, he's been having a lot of those lately. no excuse. with the fame comes need for balancing good professionalism with good personalism... geesh, would it be too much to ask, for him to go that little 'extra' mile and be a nice chap---even if he's 'not in the mood' ???

That might be a bit of a naive statement. How would you like it if you were constantly hounded by media and fanatical fans? It obviously gets really old and you can't please everyone. You can't even go out to a movie without people reacting to you in positive ways, asking for autographs/pictures or negative ways, hecklers and yes men/ gold diggers. Personally, I judge the guy by his driving and not what some "journalist" who's reaching for a story uploads on a website. Go Alonso!

 

not naive at all, and yes, i've considered it from this obvious pt of view as well. BUT, you've arrived, and with that you've inherited duties that you may not 'like'...it's the whole celebrity excuse...'i just want to be treated just like a normal person', blah, blah, blah...they want to be anonymous and have their fame and fortune....no excuses...if ya don't want the mess, get out of the ring. but don't expect sympathy. me, personally, i am in the beginning stages of using my athletic ability to 'entertain' and be paid for it. in this line of work, you have to realize all that comes with the notion of being a 'pro athlete'. if you don't realize how much of a gift, a priveledge it is, that you can do something like that for a living, then i don't know what to say. people will always have good and bad things to sayabout you, people will always be looking to build you up, as well as tear you down. i've been verbally abused, and have been praised too. sometimes, it can seem unfairly harsh. but you know what? i get up everyday and do my 'job' with a big smile on my face--because i love what i do, and realize that i'm F#^@%*&* lucky to have the opportunity--for however long it will last. whether an 'entertainer' is getting paid little (me) or millions (FA), at the very bottom of the barrel is the core human being. everyone can have a bad day--and the attention may be overwhelming---superstars are people too. but that's no excuse...

 

Yeah but who's to say what this guy is reporting, was the way it all transpired? We all know how F1 journalists love to exaggerate or nearly falsify stories? Until Alonso tells me to f*** off or I see him do it to someone else, then I don't really care. I watch F1 for the drama on the track, not off of it. That is unless it's somthing about someone getting sacked or a team loosing engine suppliers etc.

fair point...sometimes journo's do indulge...but that does not change my views regarding 'superstars'...in todays world, where lots of people only care to be 'entertained' and not much else, i think we all need to pay more attention to those people who are actually doing the entertaining. while i don't expect everyone to be 'saints' or be super personable, i seriously believe there should be a standard that we hold them to-how they hold themselves away from the heat of battle. To say, 'i don't care' what happens off the track as long as racer x wins is the wrong view imo...that lets people off the hook too easily. this goes for 'entertainers' in other realms as well. in my line of work, 'win at all cost' has gotten out of hand. it's the mentality where 'i don't care' about the person as long as he/she wins, which has contributed largely to much of the ugliness.

I could understand what you mean in a greater sense, but in this case? My feelings are that it's not like he cursed the whole team and stormed off complaining to everyone that he's being set up or somthing. I just don't see this as being a significant enough incident with sufficient evidence to critique him.

 

For a moment when i saw the word arrogance I thought this discussion was about JPM.

Like it or not you must treat all fans with respect. Alonso has shown signs of disrespect in his short history to his team and now his fans. If he does not change his attitude soon, he will fall from grace very fast.

 

He fell from grace on this board many months ago.

The reason for his fall from grace was that he had the effrontery to beat Schumacher and Ferrari for the F1 world title. Twice. At a younger age than anyone before.

And yes, he is also an arrogant prick. Everybody knows it around here, and he is deservedly and regularly called an ungrateful primadonna. Nobody likes the man's personality.

Nor do I like the personality of Irvine, J Villeneuve, JPM, or early Schumacher. It doesn't stop me from respecting them as drivers, and attempting to recognize their driving merits with a minimum of fairness.

At the track at an F1 race is probably not the place for a driver to expect to be left alone by fans, media, etc.

Outside of F1 events, the drivers still have to expect the good and bad of their fame. I'm sure guys like Alan McNish and Alex Yoong and plenty of other F1 washouts get hounded less and less as time goes on. If a driver doesn't like the publicity, they are free to disappear from the limelight.

But I can't think of any driver or any celebrity who gave up their celebrity because they were tired of the attention.

I could understand him not wanting to be bothered if he were out having dinner or at a movie or doing something on his own time... BUT if this is true as written, THIS WAS AT THE TRACK, WITH HIS OWN FAN CLUB! How friggin long does it take to sign 17 autographs and take some pics? There's no excuse for that behavior!

Ron mentioned thinking this was about JPM, perhaps he had a bad experience with him, but I've met Juan a number of times and he's always been very friendly and nice to me. He's taken the time to chat, sign some stuff, even introduce me to Connie, and I'm NOBODY!

 

Almost all professional drivers at this level are going to be Ego driven Primadonnas. Its part of the go-fast gene structure. What amazes me is that people dont recognize that.
Your 24 (or whatever) a millionaire many times over, millions worship you, the team revolves around you. Emense inner drive and "bulletproofness".
Rock Stars.
Movie Stars.
Sports Stars.
Same mold. Get used to it.
That said, he still is a twit.

 

I agree, I mean wouldn't you guys be proud as hell if you accomplished all this? Donald Trump said he didn't know a millionaire who didn't have a huge ego. That ego and confidence is what leads people to work for what they want.
