"The renewal of Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari tenure was announced recently at Monza, but the news has not stopped speculation about the future of the Italian team's lineup.

Mediaset, a major Italian television network, is claiming this week that Fernando Alonso could still be poised to switch to the Maranello-based team following next year's championship.

It is reported that Alonso, 27, has already signed an agreement, and that Ferrari will simply terminate Raikkonen's newly-announced deal with a small buyout.

Mediaset said the contract extension announced by Ferrari at Monza was the result of Raikkonen triggering a one-sided option in his current contract to renew for one more year.

The Finn's option, however, reportedly leaves the door open for Ferrari to pay a financial penalty and annul the contract.
Mediaset said Ferrari's unannounced new 2010 sponsor, Santander, could pick up the bill.

The rumour also ties in with rising speculation that Alonso is set to stay at Renault for another season in 2009, rather than switch to BMW Sauber or Honda and then need to move yet again to Ferrari in 2010."

This does make it clear why he has not signed (yet) for a BMW....

Sponsorship of Santander is already public, and Alonso did sign a prenuptual agreement with Ferrari. But unlikely he will start before 2010 and unlikely Ferrari will terminate Raikkonen's contract.

    At least at this time.

You know, as much as I thought I wouldn't want Alonso at Ferrari,
you have to like his passion and driving ability.
I'd welcome him at Ferrari. Kimi has dissappointed with what seems,
    on the surface to be a ho-hum attitude.I'm sure I'm wrong,but jeez,
show some emotion.Even Kovalinen is at least animated.

If Kimi continues to stink I'm sure that this could be a reality. Sounds like Kimi is going for the green while it's still contractually possible. Also, if Kimi doesn't pick it up he may just be mentally on the way out anyway.

I think one thing the longtime follower's of F1 have forgotten, myself included, is that very strange thing's happen in F1 and I abide by the rule that the most inconcieveable thing's take place in F1 and have. Crazy sport we follow right?

Exactly. At this point, is there ANY team on the grid that Alonso hasn't linked himself to in the press? There's another article referenced in this forum where he was talking about McLaren too for crying out loud. Why would Ferrari want Alonso anyway when they know he was using the stolen Ferrari information to his advantage? Alonso is getting so desperate now for any other ride it really is getting pathetic.
