Just as I came out the driveway the alternator belt snapped - battery light is now permanently on - no other probs though. How easy is it to fit a new one and could I do this by jacking the car up at the back or do I need to get it on a ramp? Also I think another has snapped - can anyone tell me which belt links to what? There is a pully wheel just under the air box where it looks like a belt has snapped also - is this the water pump? It cannot be attached to the alternator as this wheel does not spin when the engine starts - help please!!!!

Your waterpump might have possibly seized, causing the belt to melt/snap off. Jack up the right/rear corner of the car, remove the wheel/tire, unbolt the fiberglass inner fender liner and remove.

This will give you good access to the waterpump, belts, etc.

Grab the front pulley on the waterpump and make sure it rotates smoothly and easily all the way around.

If it binds up while rotating it, you will need to pull the pump off and have it rebuilt.

If you're lucky, maybe the belt was just extremely loose and it melted/broke instead of the pump going bad.

Fingers crossed, it's only the belt.

I've had two break on a previous 308. One was due to the pump bearing seizing up and one was due to a loose belt.

Before you jack the car up, just open the hood, and see if you can turn the pulley that has no belt on it. It's the waterpump pulley. I've had my 79 308 water pump/alternator belt come off before. The belt should have been replaced. It didn't snap, it just frayed and came off. The waterpump was fine.
