I spent a great deal of time yesterday searching for and reading threads on alternator rebuilds for the Nippon Denso alternator in our '97 355.

The car was making a terrible metallic rapping noise, and it turns out that the new belt, new alternator tensioner bearing, and a new bracket holding it onto the block all conspired to kill the bearings (especially the rear one) in the alternator. The previous mechanic had not properly untightened the tensioner center bolt before cranking the adjuster bolt tight - the bracket was severely gouged by the adjuster bolt, requiring replacement of the soft aluminum bracket.

I plan to get a new regulator and rectifier, and the brushes seem worn funny, so those will be replaced as well, as the threads I read have extensively covered this.

However, these threads all deal with rebuilding the electrical portion of the alternator, none that I found (except for a 360 thread which was not very in depth) covered the mechanical refresh of the alternator.

Does anyone have a link for the bearings required to rebuild the alternator rotating assembly?

If not, does someone have a reliable alternator rebuild shop in the north east US?
