I am a new owner as of this past summer and would like to seek some advice from the group. I purchased an 80 400i from Scottsdale. Dave S. it is #32893, I apologize for not getting you the info sooner. If you know anything about this car let me know. I have one issue I could use some help on. I seem to keep throwing the lower alternator belt, any suggestions or causes??? I also would love any suggestions as to where to locate specific parts that i would like to replace. My front parking/signal lenses are faded and could use a replacement. I see by all the questions on the forum that parts are few and far between. Car is in good condition and seems to run well but I would like to start the process of making it better. Interior was redyed and looks very good. Any help or suggestions on any matter related to these cars is always welcome.

I highly recommend Maranello Auto Parts, Tucker, GA, 1-800-233-7820. I ordered several 400 parts from Lee, and they have all sorts of parts at a fair price.

The obvious place to start would be to see if the belt is lined up. I don't know how easy this is on your car, but I would check that the alternator is mounted so the pully wheel lines up. I assume it's tight enough as you'd get a warning light if it was slipping. Be sure it's not too tight though as it will wear the bearings.

Another cause could be loose/cracked motor mounts. Again, I don't know your car so I'm just speculating, but revving an engine will cause it to torque to a side. If the alternator is not mounted to the block then I could see this torquing throwing a belt if the motor isn't secure enough.

Wow, I have NOTHING on 32893. Zip, zero, nada. Sorry Larry. Care to share color/tranny/etc?

Front lens are tough to find at a decent price. If just the amber portion is fading (shhhhh don't tell anyone) here is what to do:

Go to your local hobby shop or remote control airplane shop. Look for the rack of paints they have made by a company called Testors. Then find the orange tailight paint they have. If they don't stock it have them order it for you. Once you remove the lens you'll be able to sneak a paint brush through the back of the housing and repair it. It is a VERY close match, nobody will ever be able to tell where you made the repair.

By the way, I think #32893 would actually be a 1981 car. What does the plate on it say?

Welcome to the world of 400i ownership! If the belt alignment seems okay, check to make sure that you have the right belt. Believe it or not, there are two different part numbers for the upper and lower belts. I think the section size is the same but the lengths are different.

    Good luck,

    John

Dave, It's the blue one that was on e-bay earlier this year. Auto transmission. Missing door plate so not sure on your year question however Ferrari Classiche came back to me with original color of blu ribot met but not sure if that is exactly as it is now. Runs strong with no real issues other than little things I want to replace or improve. Need original tool kit etc. Are the lenses we spoke of available? One is also cracked at a screw hole so would like to replace altogether. I attended the Fall Festival in New Jersey last weekend with it and my 360 so will see if I can get a couple of pics up this weekend. Had fun racing the wife home on the way back. Acceleration not great but top end keep me on her bumper. !

I believe there is an original 400i tool kit on ebay as we speak: but not an expert on those, and seems neither is the seller

    GARNERLD:

My suggestion is JUMP on it for even the buy-it-now price.

These things don't come along very often at all, and you'll be glad you got it out of the way, albeit, it's missing a couple items, but I believe they can be found.

Rather pricey, not the standard kit if I'm not mistaken. 'Austn5" is very familiar with 365's & 400's, he has had a few, also lost out on my car during the auction (wanted to buy the car if the sale fell through).

I don't know if it were the correct kit, but seems if a guy named 400i responds that it is like his 400i kit, then I took that as a good sign.

My comment on price, is, well my 456 OR Mondial T kits go easily over $600, albeit they have more 'stuff', but 400's are old....finding any kit near complete is a great start.

I don't believe he'll see such in the near future. Not sure what 'near' means, but perhaps once a year at best....I always scout the tool ads in ebay, and never saw a 400 series in last few years.

I have only noticed the rectangular fold-up type pouch with cars for sale. Maybe from earlier or later era's, or option?

I just put my cars in storage last week for my garage expansion project or I would go take a photo of the tool roll I referenced. I found this photo of a tool roll that looks very much like mine. The one closest to the windshield (or furtherest from the camera!) is like mine. I was told by a then 400iA owner and 2+2 Ferrari class judge at premier events that the black toolkit that fits in the spare tire wasn't very common and I was lucky the one that came in my car when I bought it was still there.

The black bag in Al's picture contains the jack and wheel changing lug wrench for the 400i. The circular combination tool and first aid kit in the Ebay ad is the tool kit that nestles in the rim of the spare tire. I didn't realize that the circular kit was that uncommon.

The round kit on ebay is indeed the correct tool/first-aid kit. It fits into the spare wheel.

Someone above asked if anyone else had it.....yep, mine is 100% complete right down to the band-aides and bottle of asprin with the labels written in Italian.

Sorry I haven't been very good at answering posts as of late. I'm fighting some health issues and spend most of my time getting poked and prodded by Dr's who have no idea whats wrong.

You better jump on the one Steve has for sale on Ebay. The factory ones that fit into the recess of the spare tire NEVER come up for sale.

Yes they can be purchased new but they are REALLY expensive. Try finding used.

According to the series I owner's manual (p. 125), the kit that fits in the spare wheel is a briefcase-type not like the circular one on eBay.

    Hi Aidan

That's interesting, would you be able to post a picture or a scan of the drawing from the manual? The circular one for my series II has two distinct zippered compartments on each side of the center line through the circle. If you flip it over, the two halves can fold down and there is a handle to carry the kit (think like the two halves of saddle bags, but with a carrying handle).
