Just refitted my alternator after rebuilding it a few weeks back. I thought whilst I was in there I’d take the opportunity to use a new drive belt I had lying around from a Eurospares service kit I ordered some months back.

Couple of observations, firstly I noticed the new alternator belt tooth form was very different from the one I was replacing. Although it sits snugly on the pulleys, my new belt form resembles several abutting half circles (bit like a rectified sine wave) whereas the one coming off had profile resembling deep ‘cropped peak’ triangles. The other issue was that it was near impossible to fit my tensioner assembly once the new belt was over the engine and alternator pulleys, even with the tensioner at its slackest setting! I’m now wondering if the belt I’ve been supplied is a later type for the ND alternator, which I believe had a smaller diameter alternator pulley?

I checked the 348 parts list and found the belt I have p/n 144909 is not the listed original p/n 138325, nor is it the later NipponDenso alternator p/n 156703 mentioned on the Sodacoms service kit listing. I am trying to establish if I’ve been supplied a belt for another model, or if its just a later alternative that should still partner the AC Delco (GM105) alternator, just a very tight fit when new.

Could someone confirm if 144909 is good to go on AC Delco equipped 348TS, thanks

This needs some more research but I change out a belt on a 1990 348ts this week and it used a 138325 which is still a good number. They show the 144909 as an alternator belt for a 348 tb. Serial # break or something ?? Not sure.
