I am putting my alternator back together after a rebuild, and I am noticing when the lower long bolt is attached and tightened to the aluminum bracket there is lateral movement which I am not sure about.

The rubber bushings may well be compressed on their ends, but the metal bushing sleeves within the rubber, plus the aluminum spacer is what determines how the bolt can be tightened. I also notice the actual bolt head, nut and their washer can actually slip slightly into the aluminum bracket, I would have thought the washers would be larger and tighten against the aluminum bracket surface itself rather than just tighten against the bushing metal insert. On the other hand I could see how tightening that bracket directly could break the bracket casting, so maybe the bolts and washers are fit for purpose? The bolt and washers all appear original (I am using a new all metal self locking nut similar to the original).

Is the alternator mounting design to "float" a bit on this bolt, perhaps to help self align the belt?

I presume ther big bolt installs with one flat washer on the bolt head end and one on the nut end, or is one supposed to be used at the spacer? I look at exploded parts diagrams and see the two washers and spacer with no other parts.

Yes, 1988 Mondial 3.2 Cab, Swiss Market Model CH88.

Guido's comments make sense, but I am still not sure where to put the extra (a third?) washer. As far as I can tell my car has unmolested stock parts/washers. There are only two washers in the parts diagram, which I assume one on the bolt head end, and one under the nut, ie. both on the outside of the bracket casting.

The washers are of a size that they would in fact not clamp the casting, rather they tighten against the bushing steel inserts. The only thing between the bracket casting is the alternator mounting "wings" and the aluminum spacer.

This has been like this for the 20 years I owned the car, with it previously dealer serviced up to about 30,000kms when I acquired it. It was a very original condition vehicle. But maybe they used the wrong washers during a service, but then again they are of a type and finish that suggests they are originals. If anyone has the OD of the intended washers that would clear things up?

By the way, is the OEM nut for this now typically a nyloc style? The original nut I have is an all steel split locknut which is also the case for the other alternator adjustment bracket, and I presume are factory. I have replaced the one in the picture with an oval type all metal lock nut. No big deal, but curious what if anything special would be used in this application, near the heat of the headers. That one nut keeping the alternator belt tension seem pretty important.

I could just use a straight edge or laser to line up the alternator pully to the crank pully and put a washer in a spot within the bracket internals where is seems to best create the proper alignment. But seems odd to me that this would be a normal thing to do to get a proper alternator alignment.

Have you ever considered looking in a parts book? It very clearly indicates it takes 2 washers and a steel split lock nut. It even shows their proper locations.

Instead of using factory information, the people who built it, you turn to the worlds largest source of bad information.......the internet

28, 29, 30 and 31. That's the bolt, nut and two washers. The question is where do the two washers go if other than under the bolt head and behind the nut? I see no indication of a washer as a spacer. 17 and 19 are the spacer and bushings. That's all the parts diagram shows.

You may be thinking of the belt tension adjustment bolt. 32, 33, 34 and 35 are the relevent bolt, nut and washer parts, which now includes a lock washer. The items include some superceded parts which are not identical to that used originally. The fact the factory consolidates parts to replace unavailable items and simplify stock is fine. But I still like to know what the original part actually was, and may find a local source for something more similar to the original without having a nut or bolt imported for more ship cost than the value of the part.

This is the factory lock nut. I also use the special bolt I discovered through Fchat allowing the belt tenstion bolt to be easily tighened - a really clever innovation.

I am waiting on some new alternator mount bushings on order, the old bushings are just worn on each internal end that keep things tight. Expensive bushings, seem to be a unique size for these Ferrari's, no obvious parts cross to any other makes. Even Ricambi and Maranello list them as n/a. Superformance out of the UK carries them, hopefully they are OEM quality.

If anyone can confirm the outside diameter of the flat washers on the lower pivot mounting bolt (not the tensioing arm), that is still bothering me as to whether the ones on my car is correct sized original, or if someone put smaller OD washers on at a later service. It makes a difference whether the washer is to be set against the bracket casting, or just the metal bushing insert.

The bushings were perishing, and new ones available from Superformance in the UK. The new bushings seat very tightly in the alternator frame, and perform much like a smaller version of a suspension A arm bushing. I searched to find another manufacturer who had the bushings, hard to beleive it is unique to Ferrari, but had no luck finding a parts cross.
