Does anybody have a good alternator rebuilder that I can send mine to?
Alan, I'm not sure where you live, but this guy rebuilds a lot of alternators, starters, CV joints, and steering racks. He has done many for me and they all worked good. But some of the Ferrari alternators are really difficult to get out because of the need to take them apart to get them out. He did mine, but there could be some more expensive high-end places available.
Italiancarparts.com Located in West Linn Oregon, never used him but it appears he rebuilds a LOT of stuff. He was around back in 1997-2000 when I had a 328 so he has been around awhile.
I am not sure about current ownership but I do not believe they rebuilt anything or stocked very much for that matter. They middle manned lots of things though. His biggest product was a catalog.
Where do you live? An auto electric place that rebuilds alts/starters for "normal" cars can do a Ferrari one...there's nothing magical about it. You don't mention which car either. I rebuilt my ex-308's alt through a local shop and asumed they would do everything. They did not put in a new shaft/pulley bearing and it began to fail later. While it's not impossible to remove the alt on a 308, (I've removed easier ones) in hind sight I should have made sure the went through the entire unit the first time.
Very true. I went to meet the guy when he was first starting out --- as we both were living in Portland at the time (late 90's). Nice guy, very resourceful, and he certainly had some good connections to the Ferrari parts supply chain --- but, he basically was running a one man Amazon style operation out of his house --- meaning that he bought Ferrari things for a dollar and sold them for two.... and only after a customer order had been placed and paid for. And, at the time, I had more connections for Ferrari service work than he did. I am quite certain all they do today is take in your broken part, ship it off to a sourced re-builder, then get it back to ---- with a significant surcharge over what you would pay if you went to the re-builder directly.
Any local shop that rebuilds alternators and starters on a regular basis. Tell them it's from a xxxx Fiat. xxxx being the year of your car. $125 out the door here in Houston, same day service too!
+1. you are not going to get any "better" service by shipping it off to someone else only thing different will be the invoice.
I rebuilt my own since they were introduced in the mid 60's. These days though it is actually cheaper to take it to NAPA and have them do it than to buy the parts. And they test it afterwards.
