It has to come off first to access the wiring connections, I hate dropping components onto the wiring loom for support, it's pretty delicate as it is.

I hear ya. However, you can set the alternator on the exhaust. Plenty of support to remove the wiring so there's no weight hanging off the loom.

Here is another link to a couple more photos of a mod for the upper mounting bolt.

    Good luck!

i cant get the lower alternator bolt out, the dip stick tube is in the way, but you already knew that. everything else is off.
how the heck did you remove the mounting bracket for the lower bolt??
those are big bolts, maybe 16 or 17mm?
there is no way for me to get a wrench in to remove the mounting bolts from the lower bracket to the engine.
so, what is the trick here, apart from cutting the bolt somehow, or removing dip stick tube.
    this is crazeee

I feel your pain! Have a close look at the photo in this message http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=139973763&postcount=8 . I used a stubby wrench and rigged up an old body slide-hammer hooked on to the end of the wrench. A few knocks and each bolt loosened up.

gotcha on the stubby wrench. i will have to get one. do you remember teh size you used?.
thank you for all the pictures - the last one hit home.

i found that i can reach the long bolt from under the car, so , upon reassembly, i will put the bolt in the other way, and slip the nut on from underneath the car snaking up throught the header collector and frame..

I can't remember for sure, but I think it was a 17mm. I got a set of metric stubbies at Harbor Freight for around $20 and it's covered all my short wrench needs.

That's pretty much what I did. Put the bolt in from the outside and put the nut on the inside. Another trick is to reverse the top bolt (bolt in from inside and nut on outside) so it's easier to remove next time. Before putting the bolt in, I ground the bolt head down to form a raised section that mated with the slot in the alternator bracket. This keeps it from turning when turning the nut.

I have an '84 308. I am looking for replacement belts. The original owner had extra belts in the tool kit. Both are Gates 7M1000 and 11M925. Any idea where I can get new ones? I've checked through the forums and found rockauto etc. but I would have to buy 3 of the 7's and 1 11M. The old belts look perfectly fine, just something about putting on belts that could be 27 years old. Thoughts?
