Aloha....How do I tighten the loose wires on my alternater? I can reach up and feel them from under the car but there doesn't seem to be enough space to do anything...I also can't even see them! What size it the nut?

10mm. Double nut on mine, one above and one below the cable connection.

The other connection is a plug.

Of course, mine's a '72 246, yours may be different.

    Greg,

I have given up and just pull the alternator, put the wires on right and put it back. I have no air pump clutch or pump so it is theoretically possible to pull the left wheel and stone guard, find a small child, and have them reach in and fix things. My hands are too big and my arm too short. I can see the wires from there though.

If there is nothing tied to the alternator tail shaft life is fairly easy. Pull the water hose from the bottom of the oil cooler. Swing the hard water line down. Remove alternator bolts and work alternator out through the relief in the right gas tank. It does fit. I have alternator field and output tied together and run to a fuse block on the rear firewall. Push-on terminals up there make in and out easy.

If you have all smog gear in place, remove whole assembly. I have never tried but it might be possible. Probably have to remove right gas tank. May have to pull engine.

Good luck and let us know how you did.

    John
