Hi, I´m having a battery drain of 600mA. I´ve tracked the problem to the alternator. It could be fried or the three little wires are wrongly attached. I want to confirm this, Are they supposed to go like this?? http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz153/Toothpain/ALTDIAG.png Thanks guys
Did you have the wires off lately? Otherwise they should be ok. Just check and make sure that they are not fraying as in not many little copper wires left carrying the juice. Look at the wires within 2 inches of the plug on the alternator.
The car had the alternator changed just before I bought it recently, so yep, the wires have been off. Thats why I want someone to confirm if the wires are supposed to be like in the drawing I made, if they have to be like that, mine are wrongly placed.
The wires are not normaly removed for an alternator change. The plug can only go on one way. Now if the plug was rewired, thats a different story.
Most likely, it's failed diodes in the alternator. I'd take it to an alternator re-build shop and get it tested. Sometimes you get bad components right out of the box.
If the diode bridge failed, the alternator is very easy and cheap to rebuild (as long as the windings are fine). There is an extensive thread about it here. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=242735 http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=124504
Theres no plug, the three cables are separated, someone cut the plug and now you have to put each wire in its pin. Thanks, I´ve already read all the alternator rebuild threads to get an idea. EDIT: Poblem solved! I just put the wires like I draw in the picture and everything works. The alternator charges the battery, the battery drain has gone from 600mA to 30mA... Its looks like I wont have to rebuild the alternator for the moment so I´ll spend that money on a new clutch Thanks to everybody
Nice work. If you can find the right plastic plug (assuming that there is supposed to be one), the connectors would probably snap in, so you'd keep the orientation in the future when you plug and un-plug.
+1, that would bug the heck out of me not to have the correct plug. You should be able to source one either online or from a local rebuilder...
