I need to Replace my Alternator. Should i replace it with one that has the regulater in it or with out it and should i use Bosch or Marelli? Thanks
1) The difficult task is removing and reinstalling the alternator. A bit of a hassle, and dirty work if the engine has not been cleaned. 2) It is likely that your existing alternator can be repaired with a minimum amount of work. They are fun to dis-assemble, and replacing bearings and brushes is easy. Diodes are easy to replace, but diagnosing a diode failure can be challenging for a novice. A simple continuity tester will provide all the tools that you need. 3) The task of replacing is complicated by the pulley and shaft design. Assuming that the replacement has the same mounting geometry and the same shaft design (diameter and key), then pulling the pulley and swapping should be easy. 4) All else being equal, I would go with a modern replacement alternator with built-in regulator. Less likely to have compatibility (regulator/alternator) issues. However, as you have combined two elements into one, should the regulator fail in the future you must remove the alternator (no fun). With the separate regulator, failure means removing it from under the instrument pod. Jim S.
Hope you find this helpful as I came upon the same questions when replacing mine. http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=268373 The Bosch for the 308 will work but I found a cache of NOS Marelli with internal regulator that has been very successful and cost under $250. I've got extras, need one?
