The body shop removed the doors and hinges for repaint, there was a strip of aluminum glued behind them. Any idea the purpose of it?

It was on all 4 brackets on the side that bolts to the fender. Unfortunately I took the picture after they were removed. It was a thick piece of aluminum

That is correct... aluminum foil was glued on all 4 of them.

I did not have any alum shims on my recent door removal - prob for door alignment like Simon said.

The aluminum sticky tape is used to give it a positive locking surface so your not steel on steel. It’s been on several cars I’ve worked on from 77-83, no idea how long a date range used

Is it necessary to put something on them again since they were removed?

I have only removed it from one of the race car 308s, the others I left on the hinges. I myself would not fret over finding some aluminum tape. As long as you torque down those hinge screws you should be fine.

I would advise not painting the hinge mounting surface though same as the door pillar, the paint will break down and become loose overtime, those doors are damn heavy

US doors are heavy. Euro doors weigh much less.

If you do just check tightness every once in awhile, I’ve started switching to tapered stainless hardware in the hinges since I’ve had to drill some out. My cases are extreme though

It's called Zincofil and is a sacrificial galvanic anode corrosion protection. You should reuse or replace it.
